Game 1: Snowball Toss

All you need is a ping pong ball and a muffin tin.

Set the muffin tin on a table and have your child stand at the other end. They throw the ball so it bounces on the table once before it reaches the tin. The goal is to get it to land in one of the muffin cups.

It’s a lot like a fair game. It’s so, so hard to do, but it’s really fun, and the kids loved the challenge.

Game 2: Snowball Toss on Snowy Mountains

This time you need a ping pong ball and several rolls of toilet paper. Stand the rolls up in the middle of the table. Your child throws the ball so it bounces on the table once, then tries to land it on top of one of the rolls. Extra points if it lands right in the center of the roll.

Game 3: Drawing Blind

You’ll need blindfolds, pencils and paper. Everyone puts on their blindfold, you start a one-minute timer, and everyone tries to draw a snowman without peeking.

The results can be pretty hilarious. This is a great one for all ages, since nobody’s drawing is going to look right.

Game 4: Christmas Categories

This game was our sponsor for this video. Christmas Categories, from Better Dweller, is a Christmas card game that’s actually really challenging. It works your brain, so it’s a fun one to bring into your homeschool during the holidays.

Here’s how to play:

  1. Give everyone an answer sheet and a pencil.
  2. Lay down five category cards where everyone can see them, and put the stack of letter cards next to them.
  3. Flip a letter card and flip the timer.
  4. Everyone has one minute to write an answer for each category that starts with that letter.
  5. Go around the room and share your answers.

My favorite part is the challenge round. If someone’s answer doesn’t seem quite right for the category, your group can vote on whether it counts. I think it’s great for kids, because they get a chance to debate and give a reason why their answer should be good enough. It works for all ages who can read and write.

Game 5: Donut Eating Contest

You’ll need donuts and string. You could tie a donut to a tree branch, the monkey bars, or something inside. My husband had a better idea: he grabbed one of his fishing poles, and we tied the donut to the fishing line.

Set a timer for one minute. No hands allowed while they try to eat the donut. After the minute was up, we let them use their hands. This game got the most laughs of the whole party.

What you’ll need

  • Ping pong balls: for both snowball toss games
  • A muffin tin: for Snowball Toss
  • Several rolls of toilet paper: for the snowy mountains
  • Blindfolds, pencils and paper: for Drawing Blind
  • The Christmas Categories game, plus pencils: for game four
  • Donuts and string (or a fishing pole): for the donut eating contest
  • A timer: for the one-minute rounds

Key takeaways

  • Four of these five games use a simple one-minute timer.
  • The ping pong games use a muffin tin and toilet paper rolls from around the house.
  • Drawing Blind works for every age, even kids who can’t write yet.
  • Christmas Categories is best for kids who can read and write, and the challenge round gets them reasoning out loud.
  • Hang the donuts from a fishing pole if you have one. It’s the funniest one.
