Homeschool Curriculum Choices For 2nd Grade: Video-Based Curriculum

If you’re new to homeschooling, you’ve probably found out there are a ton of curriculum options out there. I really struggle with curriculum FOMO, so we change a few things almost every year. It’s not because we didn’t like what we used. I just want to see if something might be a better fit. Here’s what we picked for my 2nd grader for the 2021-2022 year, and why video-based curriculum is such a big help with four kids.

What you’ll get from this post

  • Our 2nd grade pick for every subject
  • Why we switched to BJU Press for language arts

Math: Math-U-See Beta

For math, we’re keeping the same program we’ve used for years. We love it, and I don’t know that we’ll ever change. My 2nd grader is using the Math-U-See Beta book, which covers multiple digit addition and subtraction.

It’s video based. Get the DVDs or stream it online, watch a short video teaching a new concept each week, do a couple of workbook pages, and move on when your child has mastered it. Easy and straightforward.

Language arts: BJU Press video courses

For language arts, we chose BJU Press and their video-based curriculum. I’m all about video-based stuff because it makes homeschooling four kids so much simpler. It does cost more, but it helps me be less stressed, so it feels like money well spent.

Why we switched: I liked parts of the program she used the year before, but the spelling lists were super random words. BJU Press uses same-sound spelling lists, which I think is great.

They also send all the workbooks that go with the videos, so I’m not printing things every day or week. It’s all ready to rock.

Science: BJU Press

She’s also using BJU Press for science, another video-based course with workbooks plus hands-on activities and projects through the year. The 2nd grade course covers:

  • Scientific occupations
  • Living things and environments
  • Fossils
  • Parts of the earth and how they interact
  • Natural resources
  • Light and shadows

Social studies: Ron Paul Curriculum

For social studies, we’re using the Ron Paul Curriculum. It streams online, and the videos are usually 10 to 15 minutes long. The 2nd grade class focuses on how a child affects society and how each person can make it better: being a good citizen, and your place in your family, community, state, country and the world. It also covers how our economy works and some map skills.

Bible: Veritas Press, as a family

We do Bible all together as a family with Veritas Press Self-Paced Bible. We chose the Genesis to Joshua course, which is video based and streams online. We also got the memory songs CD, the flash cards, and a map that shows what the world looked like in Bible times and what it looks like now.

Spanish and music, all the kids together

  • Spanish: Homeschool Spanish Academy is a live online class with a native-speaking teacher. You can schedule a free class to try it.
  • Music: we’re continuing our online class through LumaLearn with Mrs. Middaugh, who teaches songs, composers and some music theory. My link was for 10% off any class.

Key takeaways

  • Math-U-See Beta covers multiple digit addition and subtraction with a weekly video.
  • BJU Press video courses cost more, but the workbooks come ready and it lowers my stress.
  • BJU Press uses same-sound spelling lists instead of random words.
  • Ron Paul’s 2nd grade social studies focuses on citizenship, the economy and map skills.
  • Bible, Spanish and music are subjects we do with all the kids together.

Hi Sarah here from The Johnson Crew today I'm going to be sharing the curriculum that we've picked out for my upcoming second grader for the 2021 to 2022 school year so if that interests you stay tuned if you're new to homeschooling you probably discovered that there are a ton of curriculum options out there and I really struggle with curriculum fomo so about every year we we end up changing some things and trying new curriculums not because we didn't like what we used before but because I just want to see if this thing might be a better fit

So we've got some new ones this year but for math we're keeping with the same program we've used for years we love it and I don't know that will ever change it but it's matthew c so my second grader is going to be using the beta book this year which is about multiple digit addition and subtraction now this is a video based program so you can either get the dvds or stream it online and you just watch a short video teaching you a new concept each week

And then do a couple of pages out of the workbook and then move on to the next concept when you feel like your child has mastered that one so pretty easy straightforward we love it for language arts this year we're going to be using the bju press curriculum they have a video based curriculum which I am all about the video based stuff makes my homeschooling a lot easier a lot simpler since I've got four kids so even though there is more of a cost to this it helps me to be less stressed out to use these things

So feels like money well spent I did like things about the program she used last year but I didn't like that the spelling list that she was using were super random words and the bju press curriculum does use same sound spelling list so if that's something that you really like just know that they use that which I think is great and along with these video based courses they send you all the workbooks that go along with that so it's not like I'm having to print out stuff every day or every week to go along with this

So it's already all ready to rock which I love she's also going to be using bju press for science this year which is also a video based curriculum along with workbooks and then they'll have some hands-on activities and projects throughout the year the second grade science program through bju focuses on scientific occupations living things environments fossils parts of the earth and how they interact natural resources light and shadows for social studies she's going to be using the ron paul curriculum and this is also a video based curriculum this streams online

And the videos are typically between 10 and 15 minutes long and the second grade social studies class focuses on how the student impacts society and how each person can make it better so the focus is on being a good citizen and the child's place within their family their community their state their country the world they'll also cover some topics about how our economy works and some map skills so I think that's going to be pretty cool and for bible we're going to do this subject all together as a family

And we're going to be using veritas press we chose the genesis to joshua course and this is also video based it streams online and we also got the cd that has memory songs on it and flash cards that go along with the material and a map that shows what the world looked like in bible times and what it looks like now which is really cool and then our extracurriculars which we're going to do with all the kids together are music and spanish so for spanish we're going to be using the homeschool spanish academy which is actually a live taught class online

So you have a native speaking teacher talking to you which is really cool and for music we're going to continue doing a music class online through lumilearn with mrs middaugh and she teaches you different songs and about different composers and some music theory so we've really enjoyed that so far so I will leave the links to all of those curriculums down below so you can check those out in more detail if you want to um I'll certainly give an update as we get into using those later this year

And then I've also got videos for the curriculum that we're using for our fourth grader this year and our kindergartner so if you have kids that age you can check those videos out next as well so hopefully that was helpful to you thanks for joining me today please introduce yourself in the comments below I love this homeschooling community that we have here on youtube if you haven't subscribed yet go ahead and hit that button now so you can join us here every week until next time thanks you
