What you Don’t know about me…

I used to picture the typical homeschool mom as basically Amish, with kids who were pretty socially awkward. Boy, could I not have been more wrong. I’ve met so many different kinds of homeschool moms, on YouTube and in real life, so a group of us teamed up to burst those stereotypes by sharing things you might not know about us. I filmed mine in the car while my son was at karate. Here are ten random facts about me.

What you’ll get from this post

  • Why I never planned to homeschool (and still want to quit some days)
  • My confession about reading
  • The boy band that got me playing drums
  • How Bud and I met and married young
  • Why I’m a fan of screen time, within limits
  • My school history and my vice food

1. I didn’t always want to homeschool

I didn’t always know I wanted to homeschool my kids, and some days I still want to throw in the towel. I never wanted to be a teacher. It wasn’t a lifelong dream that led me here. It’s been a real struggle to figure this thing out, and some days it still is. Thank the Lord for YouTube. I’ve learned so much from other homeschool moms here.

2. I hate reading

I feel like I should be embarrassed to say that, but I’m really not. I love audiobooks and podcasts for learning, but for entertainment, I’m never going to pick up a novel. Thankfully, my kids aren’t like me. So far they love to read, and I think that’s amazing.

3. I play drums

I played drums in the praise band at church growing up. I don’t have a full set anymore, but I still play a cajon, and it’s a big passion of mine. And here’s the real reason I started: Hanson. Anybody remember them? Zac is literally why I started learning drums in sixth grade. I had a huge crush on him.

4. I got married at 19

We were babies! Bud and I met when I was 12 and he was 13, started dating at 16 and got married very young. I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s been amazing.

5. I’m not a good cook

Even after years as a stay-at-home mom (my oldest is 10), I’m still struggling in that department. Bud is a phenomenal cook, and he did all the cooking for about the first six years of our marriage. When our first was one and I was home, I felt bad that he worked all day and then came home to cook, so I started learning. It’s been trial and error ever since.

6. I have a degree I don’t use

I’m originally from Virginia (any Virginia folks here?) and went to VCU. I worked full-time in an office before our first child. After he was born, I really wanted to stay home, but financially it seemed really hard. We prayed and prayed. Bud started applying for other jobs and landed one during his paternity leave. Thank the Lord, I was able to stay home.

7. I’m a fan of screen time

Of course we have limits, but every one of my kids has their own iPad. I think Minecraft is really awesome, and I love seeing them build things. They also have educational apps, like Hooked on Phonics, and when they were little, Endless ABCs helped teach them letter sounds. They have silly games too, and I’m fine with that. We live seven hours from family, so iPads are also a lifesaver on the long drives we take pretty often.

8. I put applesauce on my mac and cheese

Yes, really.

9. I’ve been homeschooled, public schooled and private schooled

I was homeschooled through second grade, went to public school for third through sixth, then a private Christian school for seventh through twelfth. I graduated valedictorian of my class of five. Yes, I am very, very smart.

10. I have a serious sweet tooth

I don’t go a day without a couple of cookies. Chocolate chip is my favorite. What’s your vice food?

We are alot alike. I also thought of homeschoolers as Amish like people. Boy was I wrong. I've been homeschooling since 2015. It's the BEST! I do however like to read but prefer audiobooks. And I am not a good cook at all. I have very few recipes that are winners. But my family, we are all picky. My 2 kids do not like pizza or Mac n cheese. Weird, right?!
