Who used Hooked on Phonics as a kid? I can tell you the app is way cooler. If you have a three, four or five-year-old you’re teaching at home, or you just want some fun learning activities for them, the Pre-Reader World is a great place to start. I did a lesson with my four-year-old so you can see exactly how it works.

Who it’s for
The app starts as young as three with the Pre-Reader World. Kids are usually ready for the Learn to Read World around age five.
Let’s be honest, the app just makes things easier on us parents. It’s a fun app with songs, stories and games all in one place.
How the lessons are set up
There are 12 units with three to four lessons each, for 45 lessons in all. That means you can introduce it at a leisurely pace and let your child get their feet wet in the world of letters and reading.
Here’s what a lesson includes:
- A short video, a minute or less, introducing the letter and sound for the day
- Two games to practice that letter and sound
The last lesson of each unit is a review with a game and a little book.
A lesson with my four-year-old
We did the letter A together. In the first game, she dragged objects that start with the “a” sound into a picture frame: astronaut, alligator, apron. In the next game, she helped a bee get home by pressing the flower with the letter A. Then there’s a little rhyming book with words like pat, Nat, sat and hat.
It has tons of fun songs that help kids remember each letter and its sound. It lets them get hands-on with the material, and the stories connect them back to those letters and sounds. It’s such a great way to get a preschooler interested in learning to read.
Practice packs
When we filmed this, the subscription came with practice packs shipped to your door each month. Each pack included:
- Pages to practice writing the letters they’re learning
- Little books you can read together
- ABC flash cards
- Stickers to celebrate their progress
Hooked on Phonics has taught two of my children to read so far. Here’s my Hooked on Phonics link for your first month for $1.
