3rd Grade Homeschool Curriculum Picks 2022-2023: Language Arts, Math, Science, History

My daughter was heading into 3rd grade, and all her curriculum had just come in the mail. If you’ve seen my other curriculum videos, you know I suffer from curriculum FOMO. Every year I see what other moms are using and think, “Maybe that would work better for us,” so I change up almost everything. Not sure if that’s good or bad, but it’s exposed us to a lot of great companies. Here’s what we picked for 3rd grade and why.

What you’ll get from this post

  • Why we went back to The Good and the Beautiful for language arts
  • How we use Math-U-See without a teacher’s manual
  • Why Science Shepherd is a favorite in our house
  • What BJU Press Heritage Studies 3 covers
  • Our plan for handwriting and Bible so they stop getting skipped

Language arts: The Good and the Beautiful, level 3

We’re using The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts level 3, which covers English, spelling, vocab and reading.

Why we left it before: we used it for my oldest’s 1st grade year and moved away because there seemed to be too much in the book for one year, and it wasn’t clear how much to do each day. With four kids, I needed someone to just tell me what to do.

Why we left BJU Press: my daughter used BJU Press video lessons in 2nd grade. It’s been great and took a lot off my plate. My one holdback is that reading, English and spelling are three separate courses, so she watched three videos and did three worksheets every day. It was really time consuming.

Why we came back: The Good and the Beautiful has revised all its language arts levels into daily lessons. You can see the PDFs on their website. The first page of each lesson is everything you say and talk about with your child, and the second page is their independent worksheet. No lesson planning for me. It also comes with a poetry book for poetry memorization, a reader full of short stories, and includes art appreciation and some geography, all in one lesson a day.

And honestly, to my surprise, I’ve missed actually teaching. I never wanted to be a teacher before homeschooling, and video curriculum has been a huge blessing, but it’s nice to have that time with your kid.

Math: Math-U-See Gamma

Math is the one subject I’ve never changed. My niece and nephew used Math-U-See all the way through homeschool and passed down the instructional DVDs to us, so all I buy is the workbook each year.

  • It’s video based. Use the DVDs or stream it online.
  • The video teacher teaches the content, so you don’t need a teacher’s manual.
  • Math is the subject I felt most nervous about teaching the right way, even at 1st grade, so I watch the video with my kids. That reminds me how to teach the concept so I can help with the worksheets.

My daughter is moving into Gamma, which covers single and multiple digit multiplication.

How we use it: watch one three to five minute video per unit. Each unit has seven worksheets, but three is usually enough for concepts they master easily. When they hit something harder, we use more worksheets before moving on. We do math three times a week.

Science: Science Shepherd, Introductory Science

My son, our big science nerd, has loved Science Shepherd. He did astronomy and was eating up physical science. It comes from a biblical perspective, which was extremely important to us as a Christian family. But it doesn’t leave out the other side. It explains the naturalism model and evolution and compares the two, so you understand where each side is coming from.

My daughter will do Introductory Science, which covers creation, geology, biology, astronomy, oceanography, meteorology and more.

  • There’s no textbook. Watch the three to five minute video online, or order the DVD if you’d rather keep them off the computer.
  • Every video lesson has a worksheet with questions, which helps them really learn it.
  • It comes with an answer key for mom. Thank goodness.
  • We assign science twice a week. (My son does it almost every day because he loves it.)

History: BJU Press Heritage Studies 3

She’s sticking with BJU Press for history, which they call Heritage Studies. She likes it, and I like it. She watches a really sweet video teacher, and there’s a student text and workbook. That workflow works well for her.

Heritage Studies 3 covers the discovery of the New World through the Civil War. BJU Press is a Christian company, so the teacher talks about trusting God’s plan throughout history.

Handwriting: five minutes first thing

I picked up The Good and the Beautiful handwriting level 1 for her and my oldest. I really slacked on handwriting this year.

My plan: start the school day with just five minutes of handwriting. Saying “five minutes” instead of “one page” or “three pages” feels less daunting to kids. And doing it first keeps us from getting to lunch, realizing we skipped it, saying “I’ll get to it tomorrow,” and never doing it.

Bible: Veritas Press plus a scripture workbook

Last year we got Veritas Press Self-Paced Bible, which covers Genesis to Joshua in more depth. It’s at a kid level and interactive: they click through slides and videos and answer questions on screen.

The problem: Bud usually starts the day with a devotion, so if we hit lunch without doing the Bible curriculum, I’d think, “We already checked that off,” and skip it. So I’ll probably move it to right after handwriting.

I also picked up My Scripture Workbook from The Daily Grace Co.. Each memory verse has a handwriting page next to it for copy work, which is a great way to commit things to memory. It’s a ready-made collection, which takes one more thing off my plate.

Key takeaways

  • The revised Good and the Beautiful lessons are open-and-go, with a script page and a worksheet page.
  • Separate video courses for reading, English and spelling can be too time consuming.
  • With Math-U-See, you only need the workbook each year, and three worksheets per unit is often enough.
  • Science Shepherd teaches from a biblical perspective while explaining other views.
  • Do the subjects that get skipped, like handwriting and Bible, first.

What viewers say

I really like the sound of that science curriculum

I was closed to giving up and choosing distance learning options, but the cost was too high, and we cannot screen the curriculum the way that we prefer our family to learn. Thanks for the encouragement! I am also thrilled with the Science Shepherd, thanks for the suggestion!

Hi today I'm going to be sharing the curriculum that I've picked out for my daughter's third grade year for the 2022-2023 school year so stay tuned welcome back to my channel if you are new here my name is Sarah and I'm a homeschooling mom to four kids from the ages of nine to three and I am just delighted that you're joining me today and I am stoked that you are a homeschooler or that you are thinking about homeschooling because it's awesome and so great for your family

And your kids virtual high five if you've seen any of my other curriculum pick videos you know that I suffer from something I like to call curriculum fomo okay really what I mean to say is every year I see videos from other youtubers that are doing these other curriculums different from what we're doing and I'm like wow that looks amazing maybe we should try that maybe we'd like that better maybe it worked better for us and so every year I pretty much change up almost every curriculum that we have not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing

But anyways it has exposed us to a lot of different curriculum companies which I think is great so let me start with english so for english we're going to be using the good and the beautiful level three and I will put links below to all the different curriculum that we're using now we actually used the good and the beautiful for my oldest son's first grade year and we moved away from it then because it felt like there was just too much in the book to cover in one year

And it wasn't really clear how much I should be doing each day and so I just felt like I needed a little bit more organization a little more clear-cut like just tell me what to do which I know sounds lazy but with four kids I appreciate that being taken off my plate so my daughter who's currently in second grade has been using bju press this year which we've gotten their video lessons their video based curriculum and it's been great love it it's awesome it's taken a lot off of my plate

But my only hold back with it is that they separate reading english and spelling into three separate courses so it's three separate videos she has to watch every day and then do a worksheet on each of those courses so it ends up being really time consuming for her so I thought maybe we should look into something else for the upcoming year and to be honest to my surprise I have kind of missed actually teaching them I never wanted to be a teacher before doing this whole homeschool thing

And last year I was super on the hunt for all video based curriculums and honestly it has been a huge blessing and it's taken a lot off my plate but it is kind of nice to have that time with your kid so I'm excited about the good and the beautiful since we used it several years ago they have now revised all of their language arts levels and so now it is chunked up into daily assignments so the way that they do it now and you can go on their website

And look at their pdf the first page of the lesson is everything that you are going to say and talk to your child about and then the second page is their worksheet their independent work their independent assignment so it's nice that it's chunked up like that I don't have to do a lesson plan for it it's already done for me which is a huge blessing so I am excited about this this year and this program also comes with a poetry book a book of poems because they do poetry memorization

And then it comes with this reader book which is full of different short stories and then also in the good and the beautiful they cover art appreciation and some geography so you get a lot of stuff mixed in there all in one lesson a day so I really like that okay let's talk about math this is the one subject that I have not changed curriculum on okay so my niece and nephew used matthew c like all the way through home school and they've loved it

And they've been able to pass down the instructional dvds to me which has been an awesome blessing so all that I have to buy is the workbooks every year that they use um so matthew c is awesome it's a video based curriculum the way that it works is you can get the dvds or you can stream it online and because the teacher is teaching the content you don't need the teacher's manual so this is all you have to buy so I really love it and math is the one subject that I felt really nervous about even at the first grade level I felt like I can do math just fine

But to teach it the correct way to somebody I didn't feel very confident about so I love that this program has someone teaching it I'll watch the video with my kids so that I'm reminded about how you teach somebody that concept so that I can be helping them with their worksheet if they need it but that's been great my daughter will be moving into the gamma book for her third grade year which is about single and multiple digit multiplication and the way that math you see works is you watch like a three to five minute video just one per unit

And then you've got worksheets that you do so they have seven worksheets per unit but typically I feel like three is enough for the concepts that they master pretty easily when they bump into a concept that is more difficult we'll use up more of those worksheets before moving on to the next unit and we do math three times a week let's talk about science so for science this is one I'm really excited about I found this new curriculum that I'd never heard of before called science shepherd we found this last year for my son

And he's a huge science nerd anyways so he loves it and he did the astronomy course and is in the physical science course right now and is just eating it up and it comes from a biblical perspective which was extremely important to us we are a christian family so I wanted to make sure that their science was coming from that perspective as well but it doesn't leave out the other side in fact it gives you a lot of information about the naturalism model about evolution

And it compares the two and helps you understand where each side is coming from and I feel like my son is so knowledgeable in these things and he's only in fourth grade so I've been really excited about this program so my daughter for her third grade year is going to be doing introductory science which covers I'm reading on my computer creation geology biology astronomy oceanography meteorology and more so this is the workbook it doesn't come with a text so you just watch the video online you can order the dvd if you prefer for them to not be on the computer

And it's like a three to five minute video and then it has a worksheet for every single video lesson so it helps them to really learn the material by having to answer questions and it does come with an answer key for mom thank goodness for that and we do science twice a week now my son does science like pretty much every day because he he loves it but that's all I assign to them and then for history we are gonna stick with the bju press curriculum for history this year she's been doing it already this year in second grade

So we will continue that in her third grade year she likes it I like it and that is a video based curriculum so she'll watch a teacher who's really sweet and then it comes with a student text and a student workbook and she seems to do really well with that workflow so reading on my computer what heritage studies three is going to cover that's what they call it not history it covers from the discovery of the new world to the civil war and this is also a christian company

So even in heritage studies you're getting things from a faith perspective where the teacher will talk about trusting in god's plan throughout history so I really like that and then for handwriting I picked up this handwriting practice book I picked up level one and actually my oldest is going to use this too I really slacked with their handwriting practice this year so I feel like they could use a lot more practice to to really pretty it up so they'll be using this this year my intention for next school year is to start the school day with just five minutes of handwriting practice I feel like when you say five minutes instead of like one page two page three pages they can accept that a

Little bit better and it seems a little less daunting like I don't want to write so hopefully that will help us actually knock it out rather than like getting to lunchtime being like oh we haven't done handwriting yet I'll get to it tomorrow and then it never happened okay so that's my intention for next year and then for bible last year I got the veritas press video based curriculum and it's great it covers from genesis to joshua and it's getting more in depth in those historical events

And I like it it's definitely at a kid level and it's on the computer it's interactive like they're clicking through the slides and the videos and they've got questions to answer on the screen so I like it but my husband normally starts the day with them with a devotion and so again if we've gotten to lunch time and we haven't done our bible curriculum yet I feel like oh we've already checked that off the list for today so it's okay if we just go ahead

And break for lunch and so I don't want to keep doing that so again probably need to start the day you know before or right after handwriting with our bible curriculum but I am excited about this if you haven't heard of veritas press before go and check out their website I'll leave a link below it's a great program and then I also picked up my scripture workbook so it's called from the daily grace company and I just got this like two weeks ago and it was on sale for five dollars

So run to their website now hopefully it's still on sale and this is great it's a book full of memory verses and next to the memory verse is a handwriting page so they can copy that memory verse on there we all know that copywork is a great way to commit things to memory and I love that it's already a collection of memory verses so this is like ready to go for us um just takes another thing off of my plate this should be really good for us this year this is also something I've really slacked on this past year's like actual scripture memorization

And I want us to do more of that so hoping that will keep us accountable this year so that is all of our curriculum for the 2022 to 2023 school year for my third grader my rising third grader so hopefully that was helpful to you can check out the links to the different curriculums in the description box below let me know if you've used any of them before what you think of them and if you have any recommendations for us because you know that I'm always looking for new curriculum
