With four kids, I’m all about building independence and confidence. I’m really looking forward to the day each of them can take a night of the week and cook for the family. Wouldn’t that be a nice relief? My oldest is nine, so for now I’ve got a handful of recipes the kids help me make, so they can eventually make them on their own.

Why we cook with our kids (even though I’m not patient)
I’m also hoping to give my kids a love of cooking, something I don’t have, so it won’t feel like such a chore when they need to cook for themselves someday.
Honestly, I’m not the most patient mom, especially in the kitchen with kids. So every one of these recipes is pretty low stress and low mess. Trust me, they’ve all passed my stress test.
1. Pigs in a blanket
This is the easiest recipe of them all. My second son has been helping me put the piggies in their blankets since he was about four, and he just loves it.
You’ll need: crescent rolls, sliced cheese and hot dogs.
- Split a slice of cheese in half and lay it on each crescent triangle.
- Lay a whole hot dog across the top of the triangle and roll it up.
- Put it on the pan and bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
Here’s the crescent dogs recipe we follow.
2. Stuffing chicken casserole
I love how simple this one is. It’s super quick to put together, and you really can’t mess it up.
You’ll need: boneless chicken thighs (or breasts if you prefer), Swiss cheese or whatever cheese you like, stuffing, butter, milk and cream of chicken.
- Put six chicken thighs in a 13 by 9 casserole dish.
- Cover the chicken with one layer of cheese.
- Mix the cream of chicken with half a cup of milk until it’s blended. This is a great stirring job for a kid.
- Pour it over the chicken and spread it evenly over all the cheese.
- Sprinkle the stuffing evenly over the top.
- Melt the butter (we use a coffee cup in the microwave) and pour it evenly over the stuffing.
- Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.
This is based on a pepperjack chicken recipe. I use a different cheese and leave out the mushrooms.
3. Hawaiian sliders
Hawaiian sliders are a fan favorite at our house. They’re kind of rich and heavy, so we don’t make them very often, which makes them a big treat when we do.
- To keep it quick, cut the whole pack of slider rolls in half at once. Put the bottoms in your pan and set the tops aside.
- Spread mayonnaise on the rolls.
- While one person does that, someone else can help make the sauce. Our secret ingredient is one tablespoon of brown sugar in the sauce.
- Layer the ham three slices high, then add one layer of cheese. We ran out of Swiss once and used cheddar, and it was really good too.
- Pour the sauce over all the rolls, cover with foil, and bake at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes.
- Slice into individual sliders. I use a pizza cutter.
All the sauce amounts are in this ham and cheese sliders recipe.
4. Microwave meatball subs
My older kids can make this one completely on their own, because it only needs the microwave.
- Microwave your meatballs for a minute.
- Take them out, pour some sauce over the top, and microwave them for another 30 seconds to a minute, depending on how many you’re making.
- Put some cheese in a roll, add the meatballs, and top with a little more cheese.
Voila, dinner is served.
5. Chicken quesadillas
You’ll need: tortillas, chicken, taco seasoning, cheese, and anything else you like in your quesadillas.
One of us cooks the chicken and seasons it with taco seasoning. We like to use our griddle, because with a family of six we’re making a lot of quesadillas. Small tortillas let us fit three at once.
The griddle gets pretty hot, so we watch carefully and only let our older two help with this job. My husband or I do the flipping so they cook on both sides. Then we cut them into quarters. Here’s the chicken quesadillas recipe.
6. Taco pizza
This is one of my favorite meals. It’s so easy, and I really enjoy the leftovers for lunch.
You’ll need: ground beef, taco seasoning, crescent rolls, cheese, shredded lettuce, sour cream and taco sauce.
- I cook and season the ground beef. Meanwhile, my five-year-old rolls the crescent dough out onto the pans.
- Bake the crust while the beef cooks. They’re usually done about the same time.
- The kids spread sour cream over the crust, then sprinkle on the cheese, the lettuce and the ground beef.
- Everyone adds their own taco sauce.
We use this taco pizza recipe.
Key takeaways
- Pick recipes with simple jobs for little hands, like rolling, layering, sprinkling and stirring.
- Match the job to the age. The hot griddle is only for our older two, and adults do the flipping.
- A microwave recipe is a great first meal for kids to make all by themselves.
- Keep a list of easy meals to pull from when you plan your weekly menu.

Good afternoon friend today I'm sharing with you six recipes that your kids can help you make and eventually make on their own for the whole family with four kids I'm all about training independence and confidence and their skills very much looking forward to when they can each take a night of the week and cook something for the family wouldn't that be a nice relief but my oldest is nine so for now I've got a handful of recipes that I like to get them to help me make
So they can be learning how to make the whole recipe by themselves without my help eventually I'm also hoping to inspire a love of cooking with them something that I do not have so this won't feel like such a chore for them when they do need to cook for themselves so stay tuned all of these are pretty low stress and low mess to do with your kids trust me I'm not the most patient mom especially when it comes to cooking with them in the kitchen
So trust me these have passed my stress test the first and easiest recipe of them all is pigs in a blanket since my second son was about four he has been helping me put these piggies in their blankets and he just loves it the ingredients you'll need are crescent rolls slices of cheese and hot dogs he splits a piece of cheese in half and lays that on each triangle and then lays a whole hot dog across the top of the triangle and then rolls it up
And puts it on the pan and then you just bake these at 350 for 10 minutes I love how simple this dish is it's super quick to put together the ingredients you need are boneless chicken thighs you can use breasts if you prefer swiss cheese or whatever type of cheese you like stuffing butter milk and cream of chicken so you just put six chicken thighs into your 13 by nine casserole dish and then you cover the chicken with one layer of cheese then you need to mix up the cream of chicken can you take the milk how much do I put you're going to need this half cup job
Now can you stir that up stir that together until it's blended up see how it's blending I'm just gonna pour the whole bowl in there you go keep going all right use the spoon and spread it over top of all the cheese you can't really mess this up but we just want to try to get it evenly spread over the top you're doing a great job excellent work all right so you're going to sprinkle the stuffing all over the top we just kind of want to get it evenly over the top all right
So now you're going to put the butter into a coffee cup so we can melt it in the microwave now you're going to pour the melted butter evenly over the top of the stuffing just bake it at 350 for 45 minutes hawaiian sliders are a fan favorite over here they're kind of rich and heavy so we don't make them very often so it's definitely a big treat when we do to make this quick and easy we just cut the whole thing of sliders in half we put the bottom of the rolls on the pan that we're going to cook it in
And take the top off then you spread mayonnaise on the rolls while one person is handling that job the other person can come help make the sauce and all the amounts for each ingredient are listed below either in the description box or there will be a link to a recipe our secret ingredient the brown sugar stir it all together while we were working on the sauce my daughter was putting the ham and the cheese onto the rolls we like to layer our ham three slices high
And then one layer of cheese well we ran out of swiss cheese so we used some cheddar cheese tonight and it was really good too then you pour the sauce over top of all of your rolls cover it in aluminum foil and bake it at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes I'll use a pizza cutter to slice them into individual sliders here's a recipe that my older kids can make completely on their own without my help because it only requires the microwave all you have to do is microwave your meatballs for a minute take them back out pour some sauce over top
And then microwave them for another 30 seconds to a minute depending on how many meatballs you're making put some cheese into your roll put the meatballs on top those with a little more cheese and voila dinner is served you just need tortillas chicken taco seasoning cheese and anything else you like to add to your quesadillas so of course one of us will make the chicken and we season it with some taco seasoning we like to use our griddle for this we have four kids so with a family of six we're obviously making a lot of quesadillas
So this makes it go a lot faster and we're using small tortillas so we can fit three quesadillas at once on our griddle now the griddle is pretty hot so we are watching carefully and only letting our older two help with this job and then my husband or I will be the ones doing the flipping of the quesadillas to cook them on both sides and then we just cut them into quarters and they're ready to go this is one of my favorite meals it's so easy
And I really enjoy these leftovers for lunch for this meal you'll need ground beef crescent rolls cheese shredded lettuce sour cream and we like to have some taco sauce on ours I will cook the ground beef and season it with some taco seasoning and while that's cooking my five-year-old can actually roll out the crescent rolls onto the pans and then we can have that cooking while the beef is cooking and so usually they're done about the same time and then your kids can spread sour cream all over the top then sprinkle some cheese on
And then sprinkle the shredded lettuce and then sprinkle the ground beef over top and then I'll just let whoever wants taco sauce they can put it on their own pieces I love having a list of easy meals that I can pull from when I'm planning out my menu for the week so if you have any other go-to's please put them in the comments below for me and everybody else watching so we can all share some great ideas together hopefully this will help you plan out your next menu
