Why I declutter in summer
Summer is when I declutter and reorganize as much of the house as I can. Once school starts, I don’t have the brain space for it, and if it’s left undone, it distracts me. The week before, I’d reorganized our garage, and next on the list was the kids’ rooms and their toys.
I’m not the best at decorating, so this room was always at the very end of my to-do list. This time, I finally did it.
The before: one room, lots of jobs
This room is a lot of things: a gym (at least for me), a guest room, home to my daughter’s pet hamster, and our school room. Here’s what wasn’t working:
- A cabinet that wouldn’t close because the board games were too big for it
- A very deep storage cabinet that wasn’t organized at all: baby and preschool toys, puzzles, old and new curriculum, a Silhouette I hadn’t learned to use, science kits and random manipulatives
- Dominoes, blocks and flash cards stuck up high so little hands couldn’t dump them, which meant they had no real home
- Printer paper, old curriculum and hamster supplies sitting out
- A ginormous bookshelf from a friend who moved away. The room has slanted ceilings, so it only fits on one wall, and it looked very messy.
Step 1: Pull everything out
I started with the corner cabinet. It held guest blankets, curriculum we’re saving for higher grades, random Christmas ornaments (not sure why) and more board games. My goal was to categorize everything and give each thing its own space, so everybody knows where to find it.
I pulled everything out onto the floor and the bed and threw away anything used up or written all over. The trash can went from three-quarters full to over the top.
Step 2: Sort the curriculum
I pulled out the organizer drawers my daughter used for 2nd grade (BJU Press and Math-U-See). Her student textbooks went to the attic in case we need them later. I went through her schoolwork, kept a few things and tossed the rest.
Step 3: Swap the cabinets
- All the board games moved from the dark green cabinet into the deep white cabinet, along with the science experiments from the open shelves. They fit so much better because it’s so deep.
- The green cabinet moved to the corner and now holds the extra printer paper, toner and all the hamster supplies, instead of a crazy mess out in the open.
Step 4: Build a desk
My rising 1st grader got his own desk this year. My son helped me build it, an IKEA desk. I found his chair on Facebook Marketplace for a great price, and he loves it.
Step 5: Deep clean with magic erasers
One wall was covered in Expo marker. With a magic eraser, I erased it all without having to repaint. I used them on lots of walls and surfaces and on all their desks.
The finished room tour
The deep cabinet: preschool manipulatives up top, then science experiments, puzzles, craft supplies and flash cards, and board games filling the rest. Preschool toys went into a drawer, and guest blankets stayed at the bottom.
The reading nook (my favorite part): a little printable on the wall, a cozy sherpa bed rest pillow and a rainbow rug, both from Target, to match the room. The hamster is happy in the corner nearby.
The big bookshelf: I cleaned so much off it that there’s now room to add things during the year. It holds photo albums, Bible books, some toys, books for Bud and me, the Xbox we use as a DVD player for Math-U-See, curriculum for later in the year, the kids’ reading books, coloring books, and magnet tiles, a forever favorite. My daughter’s organizer drawers moved back here too.
The little kids’ table: I moved it against the wall and hung a free Books of the Bible poster above it. It’s my three-year-old’s station now, with a few toys hidden underneath. Some bigger toys moved downstairs to the kids’ rooms or the attic.
The desks and wall prints:
- My 10-year-old’s desk: he loves all things space, so he got a watercolor solar system print.
- My daughter’s desk (rising 3rd grader): she’s my crafty one and loves color, so she got the “Choose Kindness” and “Be the Reason Someone Smiles” prints. I changed the colors after buying. Her desk is central, so the acrylic marker carousel lives there for everyone.
- Over the guest bed: I wanted scripture the kids (and I) would read all day, so we hung a “Be Strong and Courageous” print.
The prints are in natural wood 11×14 frames.
Still on my list: a world map above my weight bench, the only wall big enough. I’m watching Facebook Marketplace for a better deal than buying new.
You don’t need a dedicated school room
As you can see, this room does a lot of jobs. Back in the day, we homeschooled right at the dining room table, and that works too. Use what you have and make the most of it.
Key takeaways
- Declutter in summer, while you have the brain space.
- Pull everything out, toss what’s used up, and give every category its own home.
- Store old textbooks in the attic in case younger kids need them.
- Magic erasers can save you from repainting.
- A small reading nook and a few wall prints make a school room feel finished.
- A multi-use room, or the dining table, works fine.

We think VERY similar 😄 I don't have the brain space for anything "extra" during the school year so I use breaks to work on the house. Summer is for totally decluttering and organizing the school room ❤️

FAQ
How do I organize a homeschool room?
Pull everything out, toss what’s used up, sort it into categories, and give each category its own home so everyone knows where to find things.
When is the best time to declutter a homeschool room?
Summer. Once school starts, it’s hard to find the brain space, and leftover clutter becomes a distraction.
Do you need a dedicated homeschool room?
No. Our school room is also a gym, guest room and hamster home, and we used to homeschool at the dining room table.
How do you get marker off walls without repainting?
I used magic erasers to remove dry-erase marker from the walls and the kids’ desks.

Full transcript
Hi guys I am hiding in the corner of my school room right now excited to show you the grand reveal of our homeschool room makeover that I've been working on for like the last week or so and it's so good I can't wait to show y'all if you've been following me for the last few weeks then you've heard me talk about things that we need to do to prepare for the upcoming school year and this is definitely one of them you don't have to give your room a whole makeover
But at least doing some decluttering and reorganizing is going to be key to feeling like you are ready for that next school year and for me it's really key to like having some sort of sanity throughout the school day I like to have a a tidy organized space and having that organization is going to be key to feeling that sense of peace in your school space summer is the time that I like to take to declutter and reorganize our house not necessarily the entire thing
But as much as I can because once we jump into the school year I just feel like I don't have the brain space to deal with that stuff and if it's still left not being tended to then it really distracts me so I love taking the time where I have the brain space to deal with it and tackle as much as I can last week I did a reorganization of our garage so I'll leave a link to that below if you want to see that next
And I think next I'm going to be tackling our kids rooms and decluttering their toys I also finally decorated our school room I am not the best at decorating or interior design so this is the room that I like put on the very end of my to-do list to decorate and we've been here for like five years so we have finally put things on the wall and I can't wait to show you all of it I'm I'm in love with it all it looks so nice this room not only needs to be decluttered
But also cleaned so I'm just kind of showing you the current state of things in here this room has multiple purposes so we use it kind of like a gym at least for myself it's also a guest room it's also home to my daughter's pet hamster and then it's also our school room so let me just show you around a little this cabinet over here it just will not close all the way because we're using it to store board games currently and they're just too big to fit in here
So I am going to be finding a new home for those then over here we have a nice storage cabinet it's very deep but it is not organized like at all it's kind of crazy it's got like baby and preschool aged toys and puzzles and games old curriculum some new curriculum this is a silhouette that I bought from a friend that I've not learned to use and these are materials that go with it not sure if I'll keep that or not science experiment kit extra pens
And pencils random manipulatives for my preschooler or used to be preschooler and then up top I've been keeping some things that I didn't want little hands to just be able to pull off and like dump out everywhere like dominoes and if they want to play with the blocks you know I like to just bring them down for them one one activity at a time flash cards but I'd like to find a home for all of that so it no longer lives up there in the corner we have this baby gate system that we do not currently need I think I'll still keep it on hand though in case we need it when you know my younger sisters visit me with their babies I'm thinking
It's probably time to get rid of this race car track they just don't use it really anymore then we've got some old curriculum printer paper that I want to actually house in something maybe the other storage cabinet over there and then we've got all the supplies for my daughter's hamster that I would also like to actually live in a cabinet then we've got house and the dollhouse toys and then I did buy this within the last six months so we just haven't really done much with it yet
So it is ready to house all kinds of books I'm really excited about this um here's our laminator I'd love to find a different home for that this is the table for the little kids last school year I had a three and five-year-old so my five-year-old is going to turn six next month and so he is going to be in first grade this year and will get his own desk so this will just be for our three-year-old once we reorganize this room I'm not sure where we will put this cork board we'll see
And then this is my desk okay and I've got some different craft supplies and this is my seven-year-old daughter's desk and then this whole bookshelf I mean it is ginormous it's huge and it only fits right here in this whole room this was actually given to us by a friend that was moving away and so it wasn't something that I picked out for this house but we figured we could use it in our home school room but once we brought it up here we realized you know the whole rest of the room has these slanting ceilings
So this is the only wall that this sucker fits on and I just I don't love the look of it right now it just looks very messy so trying to figure out how I want to reorganize this okay and then this is my 10 year old son's desk this area needs to be cleaned up before we jump into it if you're new here my name is Sarah and this channel is all about homeschooling and life as a family of six and if all of that interests you I would love it if you join us here every week go ahead
And hit that subscribe button below and the like button and we're excited to have you as a part of this community okay one of the first areas I'm going to deal with is this corner okay let's start with the easiest part here I've got blankets in here for when we have guests over we have extra blankets to pull from this top drawer though has some curriculum that we're holding on to for higher grades some of it is for this upcoming year we have you know random christmas ornaments not sure why that's in there
And a few more board games are in here I mean I just have stuff kind of all over the place I'd rather categorize it and have each thing have its own space so everybody knows where to find it one two three four okay I've already thrown away a lot of stuff that's been used or written all over now this trash can was already like three quarters of the way full but now we've filled it up over the top I need to go get another trash bag
Okay everything is out and on the floor and on the bed so quite a bit of stuff to go through and figure out where I want to put it I'm going to pull over these organizer drawers there's another set under her desk and pull all of that curriculum out so I can see everything that we have I used these organizer drawers for my second grade daughter this past year she was doing bju press and matthew c so I'm going to take out all the student textbooks
And save those in the attic in case we need them in the future and then I'm going to take out her schoolwork and see what we're going to be keeping from that and then throwing the rest away and now I'm taking all the board games from that dark green cabinet and I'm going to put them into this white cabinet I'm going to be putting in like our science experiments that have been up on the other open bookshelves and just seeing what all I can fit in here it definitely fits a lot better in here because it is
So deep which is really convenient and now I'm going to move the green cabinet over to this corner and I'm going to store that extra paper in there and all of the hamsters supplies are going to go in there and we'll see what kind of room we have for anything else I brought in some extra reinforcement to build the desk you ready all right you got the instructions yeah nice an ikea desk here we go okay we finished it yay I got my new stuff tada I love it
Now I'm just doing some magic erasing and some deep cleaning of this room and putting up all the wall decorations can meet me so I finally put a print over top of the guest bed which is just beautiful I love it I wanted to have some scripture on the wall in here for our school room as well and I think this is a great one for the kids to be reading over throughout their school day and me okay are you ready for the final organization of this cabinet
Okay so at the top I've got the preschool little manipulatives and then their science experiments and then we've got puzzles and crafty things flash cards and then all the rest are board games and they fit so well in here and then I moved the preschool little toys and educational things into this drawer and then still have the blankets down there this is my favorite piece of the room we wanted to add a little reading nook so we put a little printable up here and then added a little chair
And rainbow rug to match the theme of the room those are from target and my daughter's hamster is nice and happy up here in this corner and now in this cabinet she has all of the things she needs for the hamster and they are not just a crazy mess all out and about I put some of the extra coloring books in here we don't need quite as many just sitting out and then here's our printer paper and toner cartridge and that's a trash can for the hamster this wall especially was
So dirty there was expo marker a ton on this part and so I was able to use a magic eraser and magically erased it all without having to repaint this room and I did that on a lot of the walls and in here and a lot of the surfaces I did it on all their desks all right in our bookshelf we now have photo albums that have just been put away and bible books and those are some toys these are some books for me and my husband this is where the xbox lives
So we can use it like a dvd player for math you see and then we've got some extra curriculum that we'll be using later in the year some reading books for the kids and coloring books for my little ones and this is magnet tiles this is like a forever favorite toy of theirs highly recommend if you don't have those yet those are awesome and then I move this table over up against the wall here and added this books of the bible poster which I'm really excited about
So this will be my three-year-old's little station and I decided to hide a few toys underneath this desk I did decide to put the food truck if you remember that in the attic for now we're in the process of switching our kiddos around into different rooms downstairs and so I think we'll have space within the next week or two to put that food truck in the boys room I also decided to put maggie's dollhouse in her room downstairs to clear out some space up here
And then this is the desk I built with my son this will be for my rising first grader and I just found this chair on facebook marketplace for a great price and he loves it and I just moved the corkboard from over here to over here tidied up my desk in my area tidied up my son's desk and he loves space all things about space so I figured this would be a nice print to have over his desk and here's the huge bookshelf I cleaned out
So much that was on here now we have space to add some things if we need to throughout the year but it just looks a lot cleaner I went ahead and moved the drawers that she had down there back to the bookshelf and I do need to make some fresh labels for her for this school year and in here we've got some construction paper and crafty drawing stuff and in here is like stampers extra markers extra crowns extra pencils and then this is my daughter's desk she'll be going into third grade this year I thought this would be a wonderful print for her to be able to look at
And read and for everybody but I thought she'd especially love the colors she is my most crafty one and this is sort of a central area in the school room so I just keep this carousel on her desk for everybody to use one last thing I'm waiting on is a world map I found one on facebook marketplace and then that fell through so anyways I'm still looking on there to see if I can get a better deal than having to buy it brand new so it is a little pricey
And then that's going to go on the wall above my weight bench really because that's the only space that's big enough for the map but I think that'll be really cool I'm excited about that thank you for joining me today for this homeschool room makeover and tour of our space I hope you enjoyed it I hope it was inspiring for what you want to do with your own space I've said it before but you don't have to have an entire room dedicated just to homeschooling as you can see we have different functions in this room
But back in the day we used to just homeschool right at our dining room table and that works too so use what you have and make the most of it if you're new here definitely introduce yourself in the comments below and I'll see y'all in the next video thank you so much have a great day you
