Laundry System That Will Change Your Life! Laundry Tips for Big Families

I used to have baskets of laundry all over the house. Piles of folded clothes sat for days waiting to be put away. I’d fluff the same load in the dryer for the third time because I forgot it, or re-wash a load that sat too long and smelled terrible. Now laundry takes about 10 minutes of my day, and honestly, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Here’s the system that changed it all.

What you’ll get from this post

  • The one habit that makes the whole system work
  • Why doing laundry every day makes it easier, not harder
  • How our kids help, from carrying hampers to folding their own clothes
  • The one-minute sorting step that saves time
  • How we make sure the kids actually fold and put away their laundry

Where this system came from

I owe it all to Anna over at Just Makin’ It Work. She put out a video about her laundry system, and I put almost all of it in place. She has older, teenage kids, so I made a few tweaks for our family’s ages. It has worked like gangbusters, and I’ve actually stuck with it. If you have older kids, definitely check out her video too.

Our four kids are 10, 8, 6 and 3, and they all help.

The key: start a load every single morning

This is the big one. Start a load of laundry first thing every morning.

When you do something at the same time every day, it becomes part of your routine. It stops being an “oh, I forgot” thing. If you need to, set a phone reminder for the first two weeks. After that, it should just be part of your day.

Before this, we did laundry as needed, like when we were down to our last pair of underwear. Then I’d have a huge pile to fold, and it felt overwhelming every time. Sometimes I’d get it folded and the clothes would still sit there forever, because the whole chore felt like it took too long.

Doing it every day fixes that. You only have one day’s worth to fold and put away, so you’re much more willing to knock it all out at once. Simple as that.

How the morning goes

  • My youngest brings all the hampers to the laundry room each morning. You could have each kid bring their own, but he likes doing it, so it’s his little chore.
  • I start a load before breakfast.
  • About an hour later, I switch it to the dryer. Set a reminder for the switch too for the first week or so, if you need it.

Teach your kids to fold

Our three oldest fold their own clothes. That’s a big reason this works so well. I’m only folding for me, my husband and our three-year-old, which really isn’t much.

If your kids aren’t folding yet, get them on board ASAP. It takes some training and patience. I had to decide that clothes didn’t have to be folded perfectly for the kids to help. Letting go of perfection and getting their help is totally worth it.

We started around age four with really easy things, like pants and shorts. One fold over, boom, done. By five, they were pretty good at folding their clothes. Not perfect, but good enough.

Sort right after lunch

Right after lunch every day, I take the clothes out of the dryer and sort them straight into baskets. I have one, and our three oldest each have their own.

At first I thought, “This is going to take too long. I’ll just dump it all in one basket and go.” But truthfully, it takes me about one minute. Time yourself. Sorting right away saves time in the long run, and now I have a basket ready to hand each kid.

Pick a consistent time of day that won’t get interrupted most days. That routine is how this gets done.

It only takes 10 minutes

The kids fold their own towels too, so there’s not much left for me. With a small load, I can fold and put it away right then and there. I timed myself: sorting, folding and putting away takes about 10 minutes.

We can all fit 10 minutes into our day, and the way it lightens my mental load is so worth it. A lot of this is mindset. Try timing yourself next time you fold a load. Once you know it’s only 10 minutes, it’s so much easier to just do it.

How we get the kids to fold theirs

I put their baskets in the living room. They have to finish all their afternoon chores before they get iPad time. That’s two other chores plus folding and putting away their clothes. It’s a pretty good motivator.

Since they only have yesterday’s clothes and towels to fold, they get it done super quick. You might still hear some groaning about doing it every single day, but eventually it becomes part of their routine and they don’t even question it.

Try it for seven days

If you want to change your laundry life, commit to this for seven days straight. Set timers on your phone and don’t skip a single day, because skipping is how the folding starts to pile up. Then come back and tell me how you feel about it.

Key takeaways

  • Start a load of laundry first thing every morning, at the same time every day.
  • Doing laundry daily means only one day’s worth to fold and put away.
  • Teach kids to fold around age four with easy things like pants and shorts.
  • Sort into each person’s basket right after lunch. It takes about a minute.
  • Folding and putting away takes about 10 minutes when it’s one day’s worth.
  • Tie kids’ folding to a reward, like afternoon iPad time.

What viewers say

Timing yourself is a great idea when you tend to put off doing a chore. I did that with my dishes and when I realized it only took me five to ten minutes to do the dishes I stopped complaining about it and just did it. 😄

It's a laundry day remember that jason wright song okay guys my life has been completely changed I gotta tell you about it I no longer have several baskets of laundry all around the house I no longer have piles of folded laundry just waiting to be put away days and days and days I no longer have to fluff clothes in the dryer for the third time because I keep forgetting to take it out and fold it or re-wash a load that I let sit too long

And now smells terrible what used to be my nemesis has now become such an easy natural part of my life that actually brings me great accomplishment every day and I owe it all to anna over at just making it work if you have not been to her channel yet I highly recommend going over there but she put out a video about her laundry system several months ago and I implemented almost all of what she said she has older like teenage kids so her system is a little bit different than mine

So I just made a few tweaks to make it work for our family and the age kids that we have and it has worked like gangbusters I am so excited it has worked so well and I've actually stuck to the routine and just feel so much better like laundry used to be such a big burden and just saying that out loud feels really silly but if you're watching this video you probably feel the same way and now it's like such an easy thing for me to get done I can't believe it

But I'm gonna share with you how we do our system if you do have older kids definitely go and check out anna's video as well I'll leave a link to it below and see how she does her laundry system and just check out her channel in general she's an amazing homeschooling mom to six kids and has such great wisdom and all of her videos and just really great practical tips on homeschool and home management so love you anna okay so we have four kids that are ten 8 6

And 3 and they all help out the major key and making this system work is starting a load of laundry every single morning first thing of the day that's what you got to do start a load of laundry if you do something at the same time every day it eventually becomes just a part of your normal routine it's not this oh I forgot to do it kind of thing it just becomes a normal part of your everyday life so if you need to set a reminder in your phone

So that it reminds you in the morning to get this done you know set it for the next two weeks and after that it should become part of just your normal routine this really is the key before I did this system we just did laundry on a needs basis you know whenever we needed to get it done like we're on our last pair of underwear right so this is when we got to get it done and then I'd have a huge amount to fold and it just felt really overwhelming every time sometimes I would get it folded

And then still the folded clothes would sit there for so long because it was like this chore is just taking too long to get all the things done the second reason that doing this every day is so key is because if you do it every day you won't have a lot to fold or put away so it makes the chore so much easier and you're more willing to just get it all done in one fell swoop because you know that it's not going to take you very long if you only have one day's worth of clothes to fold at a time it's not a lot to do simple as that

So my youngest helps out by bringing all the hampers to the laundry room each morning of course you could just have each kid bring their own but he does like doing it so that's his little chore and I start a load before I eat breakfast and knock it out first thing in the morning in an hour I switch it to the dryer and if you need to set a reminder for yourself to start a load and to switch a load for the first week or

So then do it now our three oldest kids can fold their own clothes I think that's a big reason that the system does work so well because I'm only folding my clothes my husband's clothes and my three-year-old's clothes so it's really not that much so if your kids are not currently folding if they don't have that as one of their chores or they just haven't learned how to fold yet get them on board asap now this will take some training and some patience I kind of just had to decide that clothes didn't have to be folded perfectly in order to have my kids help honestly like letting go of that perfection

And getting their help is totally worth it um we started at like age four with like really easy things like pants and shorts like just one fold over boom you're done and then by the time they were five they were pretty good at folding their clothes I mean not perfect but good enough so that help is huge and taking off some of that burden from our plate so the next step and I do this right after lunch every single day again picking a consistent time of day to do these things that shouldn't get interrupted most days is going to be key because setting that routine is how you get this accomplished it needs to be part of your normal everyday routine

So right after lunch I go and I take the clothes out of the dryer and I immediately sort them into each of our baskets I have a basket for me and my three oldest kids each have their own baskets so I'm sorting the clothes into their baskets it takes me one minute seriously it's not that long of a thing to do even though at first thought I was like oh this is going to take too long I just need to dump it all in one basket

And run and go but truthfully time yourself it does not take very long so do that sort it saves you time in the long run and that way you immediately have a basket that you can hand each kid for them to fold so everyone's much more likely to get it done because you've already taken care of that step of sorting it and each kid does fold their own towels as well so it's really not a ton that's left for me to fold and now that I've got such a small load it feels manageable to go ahead

And fold right then and there and put it away right then and there I timed myself in order to sort and fold and put away only takes me about 10 minutes this is doable right we can fit this 10 minutes into our schedule every day it's not that much time and the way that it lightens our mental load is so worth it so it's all about your mindset so maybe do this exercise time yourself next time you go to fold your load of laundry and see how long it actually does take you to fold

And put it all away because if we can have this in our mind if we can get rid of the idea that this is going to take so long I don't want to do it if we can have in our mind this is only going to take me 10 minutes I can just knock it all out in 10 minutes and it's done the whole chore is done for the day then it's going to be a lot more manageable and will actually do it so the way that I ensure that my kids get their clothes folded is I put their baskets in the living room

And they have to do all of their chores before they can get ipad time in the afternoon so they've got two other chores and folding so once they're done with those three things and putting their clothes away they can have their ipad time so pretty good motivator so whatever you need to do to kind of set that up so that your kids will do it every day think about it and get some kind of system in place because it'll be easier for them too if they only have yesterday's clothes

And towels to fold then they can get it done super quick of course you might still get some hems and hauls we have to do this every single day but eventually it will also become a part of their normal routine that they don't even question it or get bothered with it anymore it's just part of their day I feel like I can't even adequately express how life-changing this laundry system has been for me and I feel like that sounds silly but it was always such a burden of a chore

And now it's not and now I actually get this enjoy it and it gives me such a sense of accomplishment that I can just like check this chore off every single day very easily so hopefully it will be that way for you as well if you are looking to change up your laundry life commit to doing this system for seven days straight just decide right now all right I'm gonna set timers in my phone I am going to do this for the next seven days I am not going to skip a single day because that's what happens is if you skip a day then the clothes that you have to fold you know obviously it starts to pile up you have more

And more so commit to doing this every single day for the next seven days and then come back to this video and let me know how you feel about it if it is as life-changing as it has been for me so I hope that it is quick interruption to say congratulations to our giveaway winner from last week's video elizabeth o2 congratulations so excited for you thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway you guys are amazing and it was so awesome to connect with so many of you find out about how many kids you're homeschooling in the ages
