We’re headed out on our summer family vacation, and I’m so excited. We’re spending four days in Indian Shores, Florida, in a VRBO about a block from the beach, then our last day at a water park in Orlando on the way home. Going to the beach doesn’t take a lot of clothes, but it takes a lot of stuff. Come pack with me, and hopefully this reminds you of something you need for your next trip.
What you’ll get from this post
- What I pack for myself, including dressier outfits and beach photo options
- Our packing cube and IKEA bag system for road trips
- How many outfits I pack for each kid, from age 3 to 10
- Toiletries, medicine and the little things I always bring
- All our beach gear, plus my grocery pickup trick for arrival day
What I’m packing for me
- Everyday outfits: a black tank top with my everyday jean shorts, a burgundy racerback tank with orange athletic shorts, and a white T-shirt with thin, loose, comfy shorts. That’s one extra outfit.
- Dressier options for dinner: a soft, stretchy black tank bodysuit to wear with a dusty rose cheetah print skirt from Shein, and a flowy white linen short-sleeve dress that I think will be pretty for beach photos.
- Pajamas: two sets of short-sleeve shirts and jammy shorts, plus light sweatpants for lounging.
- Socks. My feet are frequently cold, in the house and especially in the car.
- A sweatshirt. Even in summer, I’m sometimes colder in the car than my husband, and it’s nice in the morning before the house warms up.
- Swimwear: I like wearing shorts with my bathing suits, so I have a tankini top with a bottom, black shorts with a black tankini top, a one-piece, and my favorite swimsuit cover-up (I think it’s from Target).
Our packing system: cubes and IKEA bags
Our favorite packing tool is packing cubes. We have several sizes. Each person’s clothes go into their own cubes, and then, this is not glamorous at all, all the cubes go into an IKEA bag.
It’s not a great look, and it doesn’t work for flying. But when we’re driving, I love it. The bag is never completely full, so if you forget something you can shove it in the side. It’s an easy way to grab everything for all of us.
My 10-year-old son
- Two bathing suits
- Four outfits, so one extra. This kid basically lives in athletic wear: a gaming shirt (I think from Old Navy) with aqua athletic shorts, and an Adidas shirt with athletic shorts.
- For dinner out: a soft plain blue shirt we just got at Kohl’s and one of the only pairs of “real pants” he’ll wear.
- For the ride home, he picked a long-sleeve shirt and his fleece Minecraft jammy pants, his most comfortable and prized possession.
My 7-year-old daughter
- Two pairs of jammies (shirt and shorts)
- Everyday outfits: a cactus shirt with matching athletic shorts, a sequin tie top with little linen shorts, and a sailboat tank top with shorts
- A cute little outfit from Walmart she’s had since she was six and is still making work
- A romper and a dress for a nicer dinner or beach pictures. She loves wearing them anyway, so she’ll be comfortable.
- Two bathing suits from Amazon. They’re modest but still super cute, and she helped pick them out because she loves the mermaid theme.
My 5-year-old son
He doesn’t care about jammies, so he just sleeps in what he’ll wear the next day.
- Bathing suits
- A T-shirt nice enough for dinner with khaki shorts
- An athletic shirt with gray shorts
- A basketball shirt with athletic shorts
- A Minecraft shirt (whose kids are obsessed with Minecraft?) with khaki shorts
- One extra T-shirt
We’ll spend most of every day in bathing suits, so it probably doesn’t matter. But I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
My 3-year-old son
He gets more extra clothes than the others because, well, he’s three.
- A gray T-shirt with striped shorts
- A Star Wars Baby Yoda shirt with soft dino shorts
- A light blue T-shirt with gray shorts
- For dinner or pictures: a soft collared shirt with sea green shorts, and a button-up with striped blue shorts
- Two extra shirts and an extra pair of shorts
- Two pairs of jammy pants. Not all my kids care about pajamas, so he wears the next day’s clean shirt to bed with jammy pants.
- One swim shirt and two pairs of trunks
- Diapers for nighttime
I also had him pick out three books for the week.
The second bag: toiletries and extras
Our second IKEA bag holds the pillows on top and:
- My husband’s packing cube (he packs last minute, but he uses cubes too)
- His toiletry bag and vitamins
- My flat iron and hair dryer
- The kids’ toiletries: shampoo, shower gel, toothbrushes, toothpaste and their vitamins in a baggie
- Medicine and a thermometer, just in case. I like to be prepared.
- My makeup bag and toiletry bag
Beach gear for a family of six
This seems a bit excessive, but we have four kids, so what can you do?
- Boogie boards for each kid, plus a skimboard
- New floats we’ll blow up when we get there and deflate before we come home
- Bug spray
- Beach shovels and pails
- The anchor for our beach umbrella
- A Frisbee and goggles
- Our normal pool bag with sunscreen and towels for everyone
- Three camping chairs (even though there are six of us) and a waterproof picnic blanket for the kids
- Our collapsible beach cart, one of my favorite things. We load everything in and pull it to the beach, and it fits in the van.
Tip: I pull one bathing suit per person and put it in the pool bag, so we can change quickly and go as soon as we arrive.
Snacks and my grocery pickup trick
I packed a snack bag for everyone to dig through on the drive. We’re leaving in the morning, stopping for lunch, and should arrive around 3:30.
While we drive, I place a grocery pickup order at a Walmart close to our rental. We drop our stuff at the house, and one of us picks up the order. It’s much faster than shopping in the store, it’s already planned, and doing it in the car is a good use of my time. I don’t want to grocery shop on vacation.
We were bringing so much stuff that there was no room for a big cooler and lots of food, so this was the best solution. We’ll get breakfast and lunch food for the condo or beach, plenty of snacks, drinks and water, and then do takeout or eat out for dinner.
Key takeaways
- Packing cubes in an IKEA bag make road-trip packing fast and flexible.
- Pack one extra outfit per kid, and a couple more for toddlers.
- Include a dressier outfit for dinners out and beach photos.
- Keep one swimsuit per person in the pool bag for a quick first swim.
- Place a grocery pickup order on the drive so food is handled when you arrive.

FAQ
How many outfits do you pack for kids for a beach trip?
For four days, I packed about four outfits per kid, which is one extra, plus swimsuits. My three-year-old got a couple of extra shirts and shorts.
What’s the best way to pack for a family road trip?
We put each person’s clothes in packing cubes and load the cubes into IKEA bags. It’s flexible and there’s always room to shove in something you forgot.
How do you handle food on a beach vacation?
I order groceries for pickup while we drive, pick them up after we drop off our bags, and plan breakfasts and lunches at the rental with dinners out.

Hi friends we are getting ready to head out on our summer family vacation I'm so excited we are spending four days at Indian Shores Florida we've rented a VRBO for the week or for the four days and it's like a block off the beach so walking distance it's gonna be so nice and then we're gonna spend our last day at a water park in Orlando it's kind of on our way back home so the kids are pumped so I need to get us all packed up ready to go
And as you know going to the beach requires not necessarily a lot of clothes but a lot of stuff so come pack with me check out what we're packing hopefully it'll help remind you of anything that maybe you need to bring on your next vacation okay here's what I am packing all right so let's walk through this so I've got a black tank top that I will just be wearing with my everyday jean shorts which I'm currently wearing I've got a burgundy tank top this is a racer back tank top that I'll wear with these um athletic orange shorts
And then I've got a white T-shirt and I love these shorts they're pretty thin and loose very comfy but super cute so I've got an extra outfit in here and then I'm also bringing some dressier clothes in case I want to dress up for going out to eat at night time since I've got this black tank top bodysuit um it's really soft and stretchy that will go with this cheetah print skirt here I'll open this up it's so pretty this is from Sheehan okay it's got a slit in it
And it's like a Dusty Rose and then I've also got this white linen dress that's short sleeve which I figured would be really pretty if we want to take some photos on the beach it's very flowy and then I've got two sets of jammies here short sleeve shirts a pair of Jammy shorts and light sweatpants that I like to lounge around in and some socks I like to wear those in the house usually my feet are frequently cold and then I also like to have socks in the car I love to have socks on my feet in the car I don't know they always just get cold when I'm sitting down
And I like to have a sweatshirt just in case you know sometimes I'm colder in the car than my husband or sometimes I like to have it on in the morning when the house hasn't warmed up yet from you know sleeping in a chilly house so it's just nice to have this on hand even though it's summertime and then of course bathing suits all right so there's one bottom I really like to wear shorts with my bathing suits here's my tankini top okay and another pair of black shorts
And a black tankini top and then this one piece and a swimsuit cover up I love this one I think it's from Target so our favorite thing to use for packing is these packing cubes they're awesome we have several different sizes let's see here's a smaller size okay and then we like to put them all this is not glamorous at all but into an Ikea bag they just fit so well it's not a great look and this is not doable for flying but when we're just driving somewhere I love to use these because it's never like all the way full right if you forgot something you could always like shove it in the side or something in it
And it just fits so this is a very easy way for us to grab everything we need for all of us all right let's pack it all up for my seven-year-old daughter we've got two pairs of jammies shirt and shorts and then she also is bringing an extra outfit and things to wear in case we go to a restaurant for dinner that's a little nicer we'll see so she's got this cute little Cactus shirt and shorts to match little athletic shorts and then this one also has sequins on it
And a little tie this is cute um this shirt with these little linen shorts that's gonna be cute and then this cute little tank top with the sailboats um with these little shorts and then this is her little Resort where she's had these since she was six but she's still making it work and it's such a cute little outfit I think it was from Walmart I love this little outfit and then a romper this will be like a nicer thing that she could wear for dinner or even pictures on the beach if we want to do that
And another little dress that you can wear and be a little more dressy if we need to be I mean she loves wearing these two things anyways um so she'll be comfortable wearing them whenever and then she's bringing these two bathing suits I love these These are from Amazon and I just like how they are modest but still super cute she helped me pick them out loves the mermaid theme all right let's pack her up foreign this is for my three-year-old son so I've got more extra clothes for him than the others because you know he's three um
But he's got this gray plain T-shirt with these cute striped shorts very summery oh he loves some baby Yoda so he's got his Little Star Wars shirt along with some dino soft comfy shorts okay and then just a plain light blue t-shirt with some gray shorts okay and then this would be for like going out to eat or taking some pictures I've got this little collared cotton soft shirt for him with these like sea green shorts very cute and then this button up that he can wear with these striped blue shorts that would also be dressy um
And then just some extra shirts two extra shirts an extra pair of shorts as well just in case um not all my kids care to have jammies my daughter does and my three-year-old just occasionally likes to wear Jammy pants so what we do is just wear like whatever clean shirt you're gonna wear the next day you can wear that to bed along with some Jammy pants so bringing two of those for him and then his bathing suits so he's got we only have one bathing suit shirt
And then two Trunks and then he is still wearing diapers at night time to bed all right so let's get him all packed up this is what I'm packing for my five-year-old son so of course bathing suits and he does not care about jammies so we don't have to worry about that he would just wear what he's gonna wear the next day to bed that's fine so got this t-shirt that he can wear and I feel like this is nice enough to wear to dinner with some khaki shorts
And then an athletic shirt with gray shorts and he loves this basketball shirt like an athletic material with squash shorts typical boy clothes you know oh gotta have the Minecraft right all right whose kids are obsessed with Minecraft and then with some khaki shorts and then an extra t-shirt in there too so he has a whole extra outfit plus an extra t-shirt you know just in case really we're going to be spending most of our day in a bathing suit so it probably doesn't matter
But I'd rather have the not need the need and not have right okay let's get him packed up all right here's what my 10 year old is packing he's got two bathing suits okay and then he has four outfits so just one extra so he's got this all day all night gaming shirt I think this is from Old Navy with these aqua blue athletic shorts these are pretty cute and then another athletic shirt Adidas with some athletic shorts this kid basically only lives in athletic wear it's like a struggle to convince them to wear anything else
But we just picked up this shirt from Kohl's it's just plain blue shirt super soft um and these are like one of the only real I call them real real pants that he will wear and I think these are from Old Navy uh so if we go out to eat likely have him wear this outfit instead of the athletic wear and then he picked this out even though this is a long sleeve shirt for our ride home along with his fleece Minecraft Jammy pants they're his most comfortable
And prized possession let's get him packed foreign here's everybody's clothes well except for my husband's he likes to pack up last minute so but he also uses packing cubes so we'll just throw them all in an Ikea bag it fits so well so spags are now in this Ikea bag and I could probably shove more stuff in here if I need to which is really great I also got my three-year-old to pick out three books for the week here's our second Ikea bag which these pillows can go on the top of inside I've got my husband's packing cube is down here his toiletry bag vitamins my flat iron
And hair dryer these are the kids toiletries so I've got shampoo for them shower gel they're toothbrushes and toothpaste and some vitamins and the baggie and then I always bring in my toiletry bag some medicine for them and a thermometer just in case something happens I like to be prepared this is my makeup bag my toiletry bag which just has all the normal stuff in it all right this bag is packed and ready to go in the van okay here's everything we are packing for the beach which seems a bit excessive
Now that I'm looking at it but here we go we have four kids so what can you do so we have boogie boards for each kid plus a skimboard all right and then we've got new floats that we can blow up when we get there and then deflate before we come home bug spray we've got Beach shovels and pails and this is the anchor for our umbrella and then we've got like a Frisbee and goggles in here this is what we normally take to the pool
And our normal pool bag so in here is sunscreen and towels for everyone and then I took out one bathing suit per person and stuck it in here so that we can quickly change if we are just ready to go for it as soon as we get there it's easy and ready to go we're just going to bring three camping chairs even though there's six of us I've got a like waterproof blanket in here like picnic blanket that the rest of the kids can sit on
And then we've got this beach cart which is one of my favorite things so we can load up everything in there and pull it to the beach and this collapses and will fit in the van just fine I've packed a snack bag for all of us to dig through while we're driving down there we're leaving in the morning so we'll just have to stop for lunch and then we should be there around 3 30 or so is what I'm thinking and then what I like to do is make a grocery order while we're driving for a Walmart that's really close to our location
And what we'll do is we'll just dump our stuff off at the house one of us will go pick up the grocery order which should be really quick much faster than actually having to go through the storage shop and then it's already thought out and done and just doing it while I'm driving seems like a good use of my time I don't want to have to go grocery shopping when we're already on vacation I want that to be done but we were bringing so much stuff that we really did not have room for a big cooler
And all kinds of food so this was kind of the best way to take care of that so we'll get food to be able to eat breakfast and lunch at the condo or at the beach and plenty of snacks and drinks and water bottles and all that and then we'll probably order take out and go out to eat for dinner time so that's about it thanks so much for joining me today give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment below and let me know where you went on vacation this summer or where you're planning to go on vacation
