Spring Homeschool Day in the Life: Family of 6 Vlog

Come spend a spring homeschool day with us! From our 8:00 start through school, a pool reward for finishing early, quiet time and karate, this is what a real day looks like with four kids. It’s loud, it’s busy, and I run up and down the stairs all day. Here’s how it all fits together, plus the little systems that keep it running.

What you’ll get from this post

  • Our morning routine, from dishwasher duty to Bible time
  • The one-load-a-day laundry routine that changed everything for me
  • How video curriculum frees me up during school
  • The simple All About Me unit I did with my kindergartner
  • How a spring pool trip motivates the kids to finish school

Our morning routine

I like to start my day with quiet time with the Lord, reading Scripture and praying, before the kids are up. We start the kids’ day at 8:00.

  1. Unload the dishwasher. That’s the first thing the kids do, before breakfast.
  2. Make breakfast. My three oldest usually make their own, unless they want eggs or we’re having pancakes or muffins. (One morning that included a watermelon “karate chop.”)
  3. Bible time. Bud did Bible time with the kids this morning while I got laundry going.
  4. Clean up. Everyone cleans up after themselves. It’s a team effort.
  5. School starts around 8:45.

One load of laundry a day

A video from Anna at Just Makin’ It Work changed my laundry life, and I’m so grateful. Now I do one load every day, and it finally doesn’t feel like a burden.

  • Morning: My three-year-old’s chore is to bring me the hampers from the kids’ side of the house.
  • Wash and dry: I switch loads between helping with school.
  • Afternoon: My three oldest fold their own clothes and towels. Our laundry room doubles as our mud room, and everyone has their own basket, so it’s already sorted right out of the dryer.
  • What’s left for me: Just Bud’s, mine and my three-year-old’s clothes. It’s so little that I fold and put it away immediately.

Our full setup is in our laundry system.

School: how video curriculum frees me up

If you saw our curriculum picks this year, you know I chose mostly video-based curriculum. One of my favorite things about that is how it frees me up. I still facilitate and check worksheets, but I can get a lot done around the house while they watch lessons, and spend time with my kindergartner, who obviously needs one-on-one time.

Here’s a slice of our morning:

  • Maggie worked on English, then a reading lesson, while I checked her English worksheet at my desk right next to her. She was cruising.
  • Titus, my oldest, asked to do school outside since it was a beautiful day. He fills out his own planner and decides what order to do his subjects in. I just oversee it.
  • Finn finished math and picked history next. While he watched his lesson, I checked his math.
  • The little boys played outside, hunting lizards and spotting spiders.

Basically, I run up and down the stairs all day, every day. This is my life.

Breaks every couple of subjects

After about two subjects, I let the kids take a break. I like to keep it to seven to ten minutes. On this break, Titus played piano.

An easy All About Me unit for kindergarten

My kindergartner and our three-year-old sit at the little boys’ table right next to my desk, so I can keep an eye on them and get down on their level.

This week Finn and I did an “All About Me” unit. Honestly, I just found an All About Me printable book online, and we’ve been filling it out all week: what he looks like, some stats, his favorite things and a drawing of our family. Today’s page was about pets. (Yes, we have a hamster named Cheesy. Technically it’s Maggie’s.) We practiced reading the words and drew a fish together with curved lines and a triangle tail.

Meanwhile, our three-year-old surprised me by reading big numbers like “hundred thousand.” His big brothers and sisters have been teaching him. It’s loud all day, every day, and I love it.

A pool reward for finishing early

I told the kids that if they had good attitudes and got their work done pretty quickly, we could go to the pool. We live in Savannah, so it’s warm enough, but the pool water is still freezing. They couldn’t care less! Our neighborhood opens the pool super early, in April, so it’s a great spring motivator. I’m a big fan.

While Titus finished up, everyone else made lunch (leftovers and watermelon), filled waters and changed into swimsuits.

Quiet time: the best part of the day

After the pool, it’s quiet time, which lasts about two hours at our house.

  • The youngest always naps.
  • My five-year-old doesn’t have to nap, but he has quiet time in his room with toys and books. Today he was tired from the pool, so he napped.
  • My two oldest do their chores, then get an hour of iPad time. After that they can play outside or inside, as long as they’re quiet.

They know it’s Mama’s time to work or work out. Right now (this always changes), I work out every other day and work every other afternoon. Bud and I run a wedding photography business. He’s the photographer and does the editing. I handle the business side: the inbox, scheduling, invoicing and behind-the-scenes things. Plus YouTube takes some time.

Today was a workout day. I’ve been enjoying Caroline Girvan’s follow-along workouts. They’re tough, so I usually do about half, maybe a little more. It took longer than planned because my three-year-old woke up unhappy, but I got it done, then showered before starting dinner.

Karate and bedtime

We made it to karate with two minutes to spare, after an accident right as we walked out the door (as it normally happens, right?). Bud cleaned him up while I loaded everyone into the van. Teamwork makes the dream work. Class is 40 minutes, so we hang out in the van.

I’m debating whether to keep activities going over the summer. My son is progressing so well in karate and my daughter in gymnastics, but I also love a summer free of a schedule. If you have advice, I’d love to hear it.

We got home around 7:20, and bedtime was around 8:00. Then we tidy up, start the dishwasher and usually handle some work before we can finally relax and watch a show.

Key takeaways

  • A consistent morning flow (dishwasher, breakfast, Bible, cleanup) gets school started by 8:45.
  • One load of laundry a day, with kids folding their own, keeps laundry manageable.
  • Video curriculum frees you to help the child who needs you most.
  • Short 7- to 10-minute breaks after every couple of subjects help.
  • A fun reward, like the pool, motivates good attitudes and focused work.
  • A two-hour quiet time gives everyone, including Mom, a reset.

Good morning it is a beautiful morning here I like to start my day with some quiet time with the lord reading some scripture and praying before going to start the day with the kids we like to start our day at eight and the first thing that the kids do is unload the dishwasher before making breakfast and my three oldest kids can make their breakfast themselves typically unless they want eggs or if we're having pancakes or muffins one morning mommy I'm gonna cut this watermelon in half karate chop whoa great job I'll cut it for you

And then okay so half the kids are eating their breakfast the other half are still making breakfast I need to make some breakfast what are you doing and then we'll do some bible time together and then we'll start school okay well my husband is doing bible time with them I am going to get a load of laundry going um I will put a link up in the cards to this amazing video by anna over at just making it work she has changed my laundry life

And I am ever so grateful now I am doing one load every day and I have very little to fold and it finally doesn't feel like such a burden anymore which is huge right um so every morning I have my three-year-old I've made it his chore to bring me their hampers from their side of the house so I've got their hampers and my hamper and then in the afternoon I have my three oldest kids fold their own clothes and their own towels so all I have to fold are me

And my husbands and my three-year-old's clothes so it's it's much less than before it feels so much more manageable and now it's become part of my routine I'm getting it washed and dried and then folding it like right in the afternoon and putting it all away immediately because it's so little it doesn't feel like such a burden I don't normally wear makeup when we're just staying at home but since you guys have to look at my face all day in this video I'll do you a solid after breakfast the kids all kind of clean up after themselves

And I clean up after myself it's a team effort so I'm gonna head upstairs and they're gonna start school it's about 8 45. all right maggie's getting her english done good job any questions okay good keep going all right I'm gonna go check on the boys okay it's a beautiful day today so my oldest titus asked if he could do his school outside so let's go check on him and the little boys are playing out here too because it's beautiful hey boys we are doing out here looking for the winner the lizard was he in the all bushes how's it going you need any help awesome usually in between the kids getting their schoolwork done I'm kind of running around the house cleaning up

This and that so I know that my wash is done so I'm gonna go ahead and switch the clothes into the dryer that may seem like a tough one but just think about it you can do it now on the back you're going to need to sequence this part of your life so look at the top okay read the five choices mark the first and the last that would be first and fifth while maggie is working on her reading lesson my desk is right here

So I'm gonna sit here and check her english worksheet that she just finished up if you saw any of my curriculum pick videos from last year to see what we are doing this year you know that I chose pretty much all video based curriculums and one of my favorite things about that is that it does free me up to get a lot of stuff done around the house while they are watching their videos I still need to facilitate and help check their worksheets but it does free me up a lot

And then I'm able to spend some of that time with my kindergartner who does obviously need my one-on-one time you're done with your math good job thank you all right I'll take that and check that thank you all right what's next whatcha gonna do next I don't know maybe history okay perfect all right so he's gonna watch his history lesson I'm gonna go check his math work the little boys are still playing outside hey buddy you saw a spider oh my goodness okay all right in about 10 minutes we're gonna go do some of your schoolwork

Okay all right so I basically just run up and down the stairs all day every day this is my life all right finn go ahead and have a seat at the table and let's get started y'all are silly theo you want to do some school okay yes okay you can do your school okay take that out of mommy's chair you crazy nut I mean I can't do michael I'll be the queen of the room thank you okay all right ready boys this is the little boys table right next to mommy's desk

So I can really keep an eye on you too but also I can get down on their level okay finn what are we working on this week that's all about you all about all who me yes all right we're doing an all about me unit this week I say unit really I just went online and I found an all about me book a little pdf that you could print out and we've been filling that out this week so what I look like some stats your favorite things drawing of our family these are all his siblings which one's you yes the green I knew it

Okay so today we're working on what does that say can you read that yes me that's me yes me this is you keep reading uh all right do you have pets no we do have a pet oh yeah but I guess it's technically maggie's what is it well it's a hamster what's the hamster's name cheesy the other hamster died it did sorry max r.i.p princess sunflower oh that's really good I like that eyeball mike can you help me make a piss yes we're gonna draw a tank a curved line

And another curved line and we're gonna draw a triangle for a tail you did it yay now we need to make eyeballs our laundry room is our mud room keep all the laundry baskets in here give everybody their clothes and then they can all have their own basket to do and it's already sorted right out of the dryer just makes it easier quicker usually after like two subjects I'll let your kids take a break you come with me hello um I usually like to stick to like seven to ten minutes um

So titus is doing a little piano on his break that's awesome buddy great job it's really really good be careful crazy nut you all done with reading and spelling look at this girl we're knocking it out of the park great job yeah that's awesome you're cruising today girl you might recognize this setup here oh this is where I film most of my videos um I told the kids that if they had a good attitude this morning and got their schoolwork done pretty quickly we could go to the pool um we live in savannah

So it it's warm enough outside but the pool water is still freezing cold but they could care less so they're pretty motivated this morning to get spork done and we live in a neighborhood where they open the pool super early in the year like in april so this is a great way to motivate the kids to get their schoolwork done in the spring I'm a big big fan of it okay ready oh thank you all right now I need to check maggie's reading worksheets I got coaches thousands hundred thousand yeah it's amazing I didn't even know you knew those numbers yeah you're

So smart big brothers and sisters been teaching you let's see you got housing mommy wow yeah that's so awesome this is just how it is right all day every day is just loud I love you a lot of toys in our room up here our school room are you playing where's she playing that dog oh are you helping maggie you get the toilet babies okay one time I put the hamster in here and there's like little plates and I put some flower seeds nice ben's doing some more of his worksheet titus is filling out his planner

So titus gets to decide what order he wants to do his score can and he keeps track of it in the planner and I just oversee it all right guys just titus has some school left so let's go make our lunches and waters and change it to our bathing suits while he's finishing up so we can go to the whoa all right batman come on yeah I'm coming there's no more oh you protected me thank you oh you're such a sweet baby all right leftovers are out watermelon everybody's making their lunch all right buddy you're gonna take a nap today yeah all right I love you love you too

Okay so now it is quiet time which is the best part of the day so the youngest always naps my five-year-old he doesn't have to nap but he just needs to have some quiet time in there he can just play independently look at books but today he's pretty tired I guess from the pool so he is taking a nap so that's fine with me um and then my two bigs get their chores done and then they get an hour of ipad time and then really quiet time lasts like two hours in our house

So they can go play outside or do whatever they want inside but they need to be quiet about it and they know that it's mama's time to either get work done or work out and the schedule that I've kind of made for myself is um and this is like always changing but currently this week I'm trying to work out every other day and then spend every other afternoon getting work done and when I say work my husband and I run a wedding photography business now he is the photographer he's the creative one he does the editing

And all that I do more the business side of things so I'm managing the inbox and talking to people through email and scheduling and invoicing and behind the scenes stuff like that so that's all in my jurisdiction so and then of course youtube takes some amount of time um so I might edit a video or something like that during that time so so today is a workout day so let's get after it I've really been enjoying the caroline girvin workouts these days she is tough these are follow along workouts

And I'm normally doing like half maybe a little more than half each day but not the whole thing because they are hard and sometimes I take breaks that are longer than what she cause that's does it takes oh okay my workout is done it took a lot longer than I thought it would got some interruptions uh my three-year-old woke up very unhappy had to get him settled uh but I'm done and now I'm gonna take a quick shower before starting to get dinner ready let's go we made it to karate with two minutes to spare this kid up had an accident right as we were walking out the door literally uh as as it normally happens right

But thankfully his daddy was there and was able to clean him up while I got everybody else loaded up in the van teamwork makes the dream work so we made it here on time so now it's just a 40 minute karate class so we're just hanging out in the van let me know in the comments below if your kids are doing extracurricular activities throughout the summer this is the first year that we're considering doing that because my son has been progressing so well in karate

And my daughter so well in gymnastics that I'm just wondering if it would be not a great idea to take a break I don't know what to do about it but I also love having a summer free of a schedule so there's that any advice I'd love to hear it we got home from karate around 7 20 and now it's about 8 o'clock and it's time for bed okay we made it end of the day we normally tidy up around the house a little bit get the dishwasher started

And then we usually have some work stuff to discuss and get done before we can just totally relax and watch a show thanks for hanging out with us today introduce yourself in the comments below I'm super thrilled to have you as part of this community so let's get to know each other I'll catch you in the next one bye you
