Game 1: Feeling Lucky

This one is from Play Party Plan’s St. Patrick’s Day games.

You’ll need: a big bowl of Lucky Charms, spoons, and kids.

Two kids play at a time. Each puts a spoon in their mouth and fishes marshmallows out of the bowl, no hands at all. The goal is to find all eight different marshmallow shapes in Lucky Charms. It gets really crazy and silly.

Our two oldest were neck and neck, then the little boys took a turn, and finally it was time for Mom and Dad to face off.

Game 2: Get Off My Lawn

This one is from Feels Like Home’s St. Patrick’s Day minute to win it games.

  1. Set a line down the middle of the table. We just used a straw.
  2. Two kids play at once, and each gets their own straw.
  3. Put a cup of Fruit Loops on each player’s side of the table.
  4. They blow their Fruit Loops onto the other person’s “lawn.”

Whoever has the most Fruit Loops on the other person’s side after one minute wins. Fair warning: you might get Fruit Loops on the floor.

Game 3: Balance the Rainbow

Also from Feels Like Home. Each player needs their own thick popsicle stick. Start a one-minute timer, and see how many Fruit Loops they can stack on the stick.

Little kids can just hold the stick. Older kids have to hold it in their mouth, which is where it gets real fun. We saw some very interesting techniques.

Game 4: Cabbage Crawl

You’ll need: a head of cabbage.

Players get on their hands and knees and roll the cabbage from one end of the room to the other with their nose. No hands. Fastest time wins. Our first player did it in 31 seconds, and they were really committed.

Activity sheets we used

We also used some super cute St. Patrick’s Day activity sheets from Creative Fabrica. We’d found Creative Fabrica while looking for graphics for our print-on-demand shop. Their library is massive and includes commercial licensing on all their graphics and fonts. Their All Access subscription includes the teaching resources from their Teachers Club card. Here are my links for a Creative Fabrica free trial with 10 free downloads and the Teachers Club card.

Skittles rainbow experiment

  1. Arrange Skittles in a circle around the outer edge of a plate.
  2. Carefully pour warm water into the middle of the plate until the Skittles are half underwater.
  3. Watch the colors slowly creep toward the middle of the plate, making a rainbow.

It’s really pretty, and the Skittles turn white on the bottom.

Green milk

To finish the party, we made green milk. Add a few drops of green food coloring at a time until you get the color you want. Easy and festive.

Key takeaways

  • Lucky Charms, Fruit Loops, straws and popsicle sticks make four games’ worth of fun.
  • Most games are one-minute rounds with two players at a time.
  • Let parents play too. Our Mom and Dad face-off was a highlight.
  • A Skittles rainbow on a plate is an easy, pretty science moment.
  • Green milk is the simplest St. Patrick’s Day treat there is.
