1. Conversation heart bingo

You probably know how to play bingo. Give your child a bingo card, then print a second sheet and cut it up into the pieces you’ll call out. Conversation hearts make perfect markers, or use whatever you have on hand. The goal is five in a row.

2. Valentine letter matching

This one comes from I Heart Crafty Things. I got white circle stickers from the Dollar Tree, the kind you’d use for a yard sale, and wrote uppercase letters on them. The hearts have lowercase letters, and your child matches each sticker to the right heart.

It’s a great letter activity for this age. As you work together, ask, “What does the D say? What does the K say?”

3. Fizzy hearts

Our first science experiment. You’ll need:

  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring
  • Pipettes
  1. Pour vinegar into cups and let your kids add food coloring.
  2. Squirt glue onto the paper in heart shapes.
  3. Dump baking soda over the hearts. Pour the extra off onto another paper to use again.
  4. Use the pipettes to squirt colored vinegar onto the baking soda hearts and enjoy the fizzy explosions.

Our kids love this one. Here’s the fizzy hearts experiment.

4. Candy heart sort

Rockabye Parents has a free printable with different colored hearts. Give your child a bag of conversation hearts and have them sort each candy onto the matching color. For extra fine motor practice, let them use little kid tweezers. When they’re done, have them count how many of each color they have.

5. Dancing candy hearts

This was definitely the crowd pleaser. You’ll need:

  • A tall clear glass
  • A handful of conversation hearts
  • Baking soda
  • White distilled vinegar
  1. Fill the glass halfway with water.
  2. Add about a tablespoon of baking soda and mix.
  3. Let it sit about 15 seconds so the water turns clear again.
  4. Drop in a small handful of conversation hearts. They’ll sink to the bottom.
  5. Now the fun part: let your child pour in vinegar until the liquid is near the top of the glass.

First the candy shoots to the top and bubbles as the baking soda and vinegar mix and release carbon dioxide. Then the hearts dance up and down from the chemical reaction. It lasts three to five minutes. Here’s the dancing hearts experiment.

Key takeaways

  • A bag of conversation hearts powers bingo, sorting and a science experiment.
  • Dollar Tree circle stickers turn a printable into a letter matching game.
  • Baking soda and vinegar make two easy Valentine’s experiments.
  • Tweezers add fine motor practice to any sorting activity.
