How to Combat Boredom in Kids this Summer

I really don’t want to hear “I’m bored” all summer. So I made a list for the kids to check whenever boredom hits. It hangs in our kitchen, and the rule is simple: if you’re bored, consult the list.

Our summer “I’m bored” list

Here’s everything on ours:

  1. Ask friends to play
  2. Read
  3. Write a story
  4. Write a card to a family member or friend
  5. Ride your bike
  6. Ask what you can help Mommy with
  7. Draw on the driveway with chalk
  8. Build a fort
  9. Play a board game
  10. Play hide-and-seek
  11. Make a craft
  12. Work on your summer goals

Why it works

There are so many things kids could do. They just don’t always think of them in the moment. Putting the ideas on paper, somewhere they see every day, means they can find something on their own instead of coming to me.

And honestly? All of these things are to make my life as a mom easier. (Notice “ask what you can help Mommy with” made the list. Sometimes that one ends the boredom real fast.)

Make your own

  1. Brainstorm activities your kids can do without much help.
  2. Mix in a few quiet ones, a few active ones and one helpful chore.
  3. Add their summer goals, if they have them.
  4. Hang it somewhere central, like the kitchen.

Pair it with a summer routine checklist and 20 minutes of daily learning, and summer runs a lot smoother.
