Summer is for slowing down. But I don’t want our kids to spend all of it being lazy bums, either. Here’s the thinking behind how we approach it.
Summer isn’t immune
What I’m really after with our kids is fostering a good work ethic, good goal setting and real drive, so they can succeed in life when it’s time to fly the coop. And I feel like summer isn’t completely immune to that. Those habits don’t take three months off.
How we keep summer productive (and still fun)
We use a few simple tools:
- A daily routine checklist in each kid’s room, so they manage their own day. Here’s our summer routine for kids.
- Summer goals that each kid works toward.
- A boredom list in the kitchen, so “I’m bored” turns into something useful. See how we combat boredom in kids this summer.
- Twenty minutes of learning each weekday, so they don’t forget what they learned all year. Here’s how we keep kids from forgetting what they’ve learned.
It’s not about filling every minute. It’s about keeping good habits alive while everyone enjoys the break.
