How to Organize Your Medicine at Home: Organize Medicine With Me

Our bathroom closet is where we keep medicine, extra toiletries, towels, sheets and a bunch of random things. It was a crazy mess, it was always hard to find the medicine we needed, and a lot of it was expired. Bud asked me to make it easier to find things, and he knows I love an organizing project, so he said, “Just run with it.” Here’s exactly how I did it.

What you’ll get from this post

  • How I picked my medicine categories before buying any containers
  • The zip bag trick that tells you what size bins you need
  • Why I lay pill bottles down instead of standing them up
  • Where I found cheap acrylic drawers and bins
  • How the finished closet is set up, shelf by shelf

Step 1: Pick your categories first

If you’ve ever seen The Home Edit, they’re amazing. I’d love clear acrylic everything in my house, but as you may know, it adds up fast. So I wanted to figure out what we really needed to make this closet look good and work well for Bud and me.

First, I Googled medicine cabinet categories and wrote down seven to start with. I figured I might add a couple as I went.

  • Prescription medicines
  • Pain relievers and fever reducers
  • Cold medicines
  • First aid
  • Bud’s back stock of daily vitamins, supplements and allergy pills (he fills a days-of-the-week pill box, and I wanted refilling it each week to be easy)
  • My back stock

Step 2: Sort everything into zip bags

I wrote each category on a sticky note and stuck it on a gallon-size zip bag. Then I pulled everything out of the closet and sorted it into the bags.

Here’s why: I didn’t want to buy a container and find out it only fits part of a category. Sorting first shows you how much is in each category, so every category can fit in one spot and flow well in the closet. You can reuse the bags later too.

Step 3: Measure before you buy

Once everything was sorted, I measured what was in each bag to figure out what size containers I needed. You can measure the stuffed bag as is, or take things out and measure them individually.

You also need to decide whether things will stand up or lay flat. Our two biggest categories ended up being cold medicines and stomach medicines.

Why I lay pill bottles down

I scored two stackable acrylic drawers and one bigger, shallow acrylic drawer at a yard sale. I tested the shallow drawer with medicine bottles laid down, and I really liked it. The label is on the side of a pill bottle, not the top. Laid down, I can quickly see everything I have.

Everything fit except one bottle that was just too big. I looked on Amazon for the same drawer a little taller. Spoiler alert: nothing really fit what I wanted, and it was so expensive, so I went with something else. Our pain relievers fit perfectly in a small drawer, though.

Cheap finds: Dollar General and Amazon

At Dollar General, I found a set for five dollars with a divided tray. It was perfect for a few of my smaller categories that wouldn’t fill a whole bin, like my back stock and some creams we aren’t using right now but might need.

I also ordered a four-pack of organizer bins from Amazon. They have handles on each side and some texture on the bottom so they don’t slide. They’re pretty big, both tall and wide.

  • Cold medicines fit with extra room to add more later.
  • Bud’s supplements fit with space to spare. At this rate, I have a feeling he’ll add more. We are aging.
  • Stomach medicines got their own bin.
  • Kids’ medicine back stock and extra new stuff (deodorant, ChapStick, razors) share one bin, turned sideways with a label on each end.

Use what you have, too. One of my “new” containers was an old OxiClean tub that had been organizing things for years.

Toss the expired stuff

I threw away a ton of stuff during this project. Some of it was very, very expired. We’re talking eight years. That cleared out a good amount of space.

Labels: done is better than perfect

I have a Silhouette Cameo, but I’ve only tried one other project on it. I tried really hard to make pretty labels and it defeated me after a couple of hours. So I used Bud’s Dymo label maker for now. I’d love to update them to a pretty font someday, but it works.

The finished closet

  • Top shelf: back stock of new products, and new kids’ medicines
  • Second shelf: my back stock, anti-itch cream, and old prescriptions we keep just in case
  • Drawer: pain relievers and fever reducers, plus Q-tips and toothpicks
  • Bins: the stomach category, Bud’s vitamins and supplements, and cold medicine
  • Lower shelves: towels, extra sheets, washcloths, a steamer, first aid, feminine products, and our bathroom cleaning supplies at the bottom

I added a motion-sensor light at the top, and the door has a lock so only Bud and I can get in. When I showed Bud, his verdict was, “Very impressive.”

Key takeaways

  • Decide your categories before you buy any containers.
  • Sort into labeled zip bags first so you know how big each category is.
  • Measure, and decide whether items will stand up or lay flat.
  • Laying pill bottles down makes the labels easy to read.
  • Check yard sales and dollar stores before buying pricey acrylic.
  • Toss expired medicine as you go.

FAQ

How do you organize medicine at home?

Choose categories like prescriptions, pain relievers, cold medicine, first aid and supplements. Sort everything into labeled bags, measure, then buy containers that fit each category.

Should pill bottles stand up or lay down?

We like them laid down in a shallow drawer, because the label is on the side of the bottle, so you can see everything at a glance.

Where can I find cheap organizing containers?

I found acrylic drawers at a yard sale and a five-dollar divided set at Dollar General, and ordered a four-pack of bins online.

How do you keep kids out of the medicine closet?

Our closet door has a lock, so only my husband and I can get in.

Hi friends welcome to my bathroom today we are going to try to reorganize my medicine cabinet this is going to be a several day process but today we're going to take all of the things out of the closet and we're gonna try to categorize it all if you've ever seen the home edits they're amazing and I love all of the organizing that they do I want to use all clear acrylic stuff in my house but as you may know it really adds up fast so we're gonna see what we can do what we really need for this closet to make it look good make it easily accessible

And functional for me and my husband to find different medicines um first aid stuff and the random miscellaneous things that we house in our bathroom closet if this is something that you are needing to do in your house hopefully this will motivate you to tackle it so here it is this is our bathroom closet um you know there is some sort of organization to this despite how messy it looks but it is pretty terrible and I'm I'm pretty sure that there's a lot of stuff in here that is expired that we could get rid of or things that I could probably house in a different spot in our house that makes a little bit more organizational sense

So I'm gonna work through each one of these shelves and figure out what we can get rid of and how I can make these shelves make sense and make all the medicines very easy to find and all in one spot so the first thing I did was go on google and looked up medicine cabinet categories and I just wrote down seven that I'm going to use for now and then I think as I pull things out I may have to add a couple of categories

But what I'm going to start with are prescription medicines pain relievers and fever reducers cold medicines first aid and then my husband's back stock of like the daily medicines that he takes vitamins and things allergy pills he has those in like one of the old man pill boxes you know the days of the week on it but he needs to have like a back stock area in his closet to refill it and I want to make that easy for him to do every week and then I'll have a backstack area for myself

So these are my categories I've put them on post-it notes for now and I'm going to use gallon size ziploc bags put them on there you know so I can reuse these for something else later and put everything into their categories that way I know what size containers I need for these different categories I don't want to get a container and it only fits certain things out of that category I wanted to fit all of the things in one area I want it to all fit

Well and flow well in the closet so that's my goal I was yard sailing recently and totally scored let me reach for it on two of these acrylic drawers okay pretty excited about this they're stackable and then I also found they also had this acrylic drawer it's pretty big but it's not very tall so I'm kind of thinking about putting medicine bottles in it laying down which also seems smart because the label is on the body of the pill bottle not the top so maybe I'll like that better because I can see it all

So we're going to test this out see what we like see what fits and then make some purchases probably on amazon okay I've got my post-it notes on my bags and now I'm just gonna go sort through this closet here wish me luck one two three four okay so now that I have my bags my categories made up I'm going to measure the bottles and the things that are in each bag so that I know what size container I need to get one quick way I could do that is to literally just measure this bag how I have it already stuffed into here or I may decide to take them out

And measure them individually but I need to determine if I want to have things standing up in a container or laying flat so my two biggest categories ended up being cold medicines and stomach related medicines so I'm gonna see if these will fit and the containers that I already have to see if this shallow one is gonna work and lay things down in it or if I want something that's taller so we're just gonna test it out real quick it's all fitting in pretty good except for this particular bottle it is just too big it will not fit

But I have to say with all of this let me close this over I am really digging having it all laid down that way I can just quickly see what I have I can see all the labels very easily so yeah I think I may go on amazon and just I'll measure this bottle and see if there's one of these that's the same exact size just a little taller spoiler alert there was nothing that really fit what I was looking for and it was so expensive I did end up going with something else

Okay my pain reliever category fits well in this little drawer so I'm gonna go ahead and put that in here so I ordered some organizational bins off of amazon but today I went to the dollar general and I found this set for five dollars now I'm not sure what I'm going to use this top part for really I wanted this piece where it's got the dividers and so I want to see what we can fit in here let's go check it out so I've got some back stock items for myself that I'm thinking might go

Well in here like it's not that many items so it's not going to fill up a whole bin so that's why I was thinking that this thing that has the dividers would work well for a few of my smaller categories I don't know if you can hear my kids in the background but they're being a little wild anyways here are the few backstock items that I have and that fits perfectly in this little spot now I'm gonna see what else I can fit in here

Okay so I think this works so this is my back stock this is like some fungus related stuff like a wart removal and athlete's foot and I don't know cream for like eczema that we're not using currently but maybe need to uh so I think I will label those spots on here and this can go up in the top of the medicine closet my organizer bins are in from amazon let's check them out so I got a four pack that seemed to be a cheap way to do it

And they have handles on each side and some texture on the bottom to help from slipping they're they're pretty big pretty tall and wide I can put the exact link to this product in the description box below and you can see the exact measurements but let's go ahead and see what we can fit inside the first category that I want to try is the cold category okay there you have it I actually have extra room in here which is fine if I end up getting more things then I've got some space to add to this

So I'm I'm pretty happy with this size and this layout okay now I'm ready to do buds supplements with vitamins and all those things perfect it all fits and he's got some extra space in here in case he adds to his supplements which at this rate I have a feeling he will I mean we are aging okay now we're gonna do the stomach category that sounds really gross but here we go I've got two categories that I think I might combine instead of putting it into the closet this direction I'll put it in this way sideways

And put labels on both ends of it and roll with that I think that might work so I've got back stock for kids medicines and then random new stuff look this has have been organized before it was an old oxiclean container you know use what you have um and this is like just other back stock new deodorant chapsticks razors random stuff in here so extra stuff so I think that works but they're both in the same container okay I am finally done with the whole closet I'm

So excited I threw away a ton of stuff throughout this whole process found a lot of things that were very expired we're talking like eight years expired some of it kind of crazy um so cleared out a good amount of space in there so I could be more organized I have a silhouette cameo but I've only ever attempted one other project on it and have not learned how to use it so I tried really hard to make pretty labels on it and it defeated me after like a couple of hours

So I just used my husband's dymo label maker for now and put some labels on there but I would love to update those labels eventually to like some pretty font but it works for now so without further ado let me show you the final result so up at the top I've got our extras our back stock if you will which has new products in it and then also kids new medicines on this side okay on the second shelf I've got my back stock my extra new stuff

And anti-itch cream and then these are old prescriptions that we keep on hand just in case pain relievers and fever reducers are in this drawer I've got q-tips sitting here and toothpicks this is just a glass that I had at home I may find something to replace this with so I can put my glass back in the kitchen but this worked really well for now the stomach category buds back stock all of his vitamins and things in there this is the cold category and then I've got our towels

And extra bed sheets down here washcloths and the next row down that's a steamer and then we've got first aid this is feminine products and then I also keep our bucket of cleaning supplies for cleaning the bathrooms and the bottom there and I put a light up at the top that is motion sensor what up and we have a lock that goes on that door so just me and my husband can get in there and access those things but yeah I am really excited I'm gonna show it all to my husband because really this was was his request he wanted it to be easier to find things in there

And knows that I love organizational projects so he said just run with it so let's see what he thinks all right I'm done with the medicine closet I'm ready to show you oh my gosh open the door drumroll please look at the fancy look at this it's perfect but it looks so good let's see what we have right you can see all my deodorant there's so many hey mommy oh thank you baby that's good great job thank you that's a lot of work I'm glad you like it you need a baby

Okay what size we have all of the sizes right at your fingertips all in the same spot great job very impressive thank you
