The 20-minute rule

Every weekday, I have the kids spend 20 minutes doing one of these:

  • Coloring
  • Writing
  • Crafting
  • Learning something new
  • Math fact practice

That’s it. Just 20 minutes.

Why it works

It’s small enough that nobody fights it, and it keeps their brains in the habit of learning without turning summer into school. Kids get to pick from a few options, so it doesn’t feel like a chore. And math fact practice is right there on the list, because those facts are usually the first thing to slip.

You can build the 20 minutes into their summer routine checklist so they check it off along with everything else.
