Lazy Summer Day with 4 Kids: Sword Fighting, Makeup Try-on, Pool Fun

After a busy week of going out and doing things, we had a super lazy day at home, and it was glorious. Some days you just need to chill, right? Come hang out with us for sword fighting, a little makeup try-on (disclaimer: I am not a beauty vlogger), reading practice in the car, and an evening at the pool.

A slow morning at home

We had a super lazy morning. The little boys were busy preparing a “show” for us, and there was plenty of sword fighting. By lunchtime the kids were watching a show while eating, and I was finally eating lunch too.

The only thing we really had to do was karate for my son that night. So I didn’t need to do my makeup, but I had some new things I wanted to try. So: a little get ready with me.

My favorite skincare

First up was the Mary Kay TimeWise day cream. The whole TimeWise skincare collection is my favorite (I use normal/dry), and the link is to my consultant and dear friend. I love how it smells and feels.

There’s a TimeWise night cream too, with a different and wonderful scent. Using it has become such a routine that it’s almost like the smell of sleep. It’s my signal that it’s time to relax.

Why summer is my reset season

While I put on foundation, I talked about my goal for the weekend: cleaning out the school room. Summer is a great time to relax, but it’s also one of my favorite times to get the house back in order. Everyone talks about spring cleaning, but in spring we’re still knee-deep in school. In summer my brain is free to think through organizing solutions, and it’s a good time to refresh before the next school year.

Trying a blush stick

I got two new things from iMethod Beauty. The first is a blush stick. It has a little mirror inside so you can take it with you, plus instructions, which is great for people like me who have no idea what we’re doing with makeup.

I tried the shade called hot cherry, a sheer red. On the first side I brushed it on, and whoa, that’s really quite red. I wiped some away. On the other side I tapped it on with my finger instead, and it went on much lighter. Makeup tips with Sarah: use less, and try your finger! I liked it.

Eyebrows with a stencil

Any time I’ve tried an eyebrow pencil, it looks crazy. I’ve never mastered it. So I was excited to try the iMethod eyebrow kit. It comes in a little travel pouch with stencils in different shapes, a brow pomade, applicators and, thankfully, instructions.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Pick the stencil that fits you best. Number three was a solid fit for me.
  2. Dip the sponge into the pomade and apply it through the stencil.
  3. Use the smaller tool for sparse areas.
  4. Finish with the spoolie for a natural look.

Honestly, I could’ve used a little less so it wasn’t as dark, so I took a bit off. But it looked way better than my clown-like pencil attempts.

Reading practice at karate pickup

When we dropped my son off at karate, we all hung out in the car. The kids brought their iPads, and it was a great time to catch up on Hooked on Phonics reading with my five-year-old. We’d been slacking this summer, so we did a few pages together. When my son came back, he was a green belt!

Dinner at the pool

We brought dinner up to the pool for an evening dip. It had stormed almost every day for two weeks, so I hadn’t been as much. It was so nice to just enjoy the evening. One warning: I always forget the flies love to come out at sunset. We were under attack, and I was running around swatting myself while the kids had a blast. Then it was off to the van and bedtime for our littlest.

How do you keep up with reading practice in the summer?

We use small pockets of time. While my son was at karate, I did Hooked on Phonics reading with my five-year-old in the car.

Is an eyebrow stencil easier than a brow pencil?

For me it was. My pencil attempts always looked crazy, and the stencil looked way better. I’d just use a little less pomade next time.

When do you deep clean and organize the house?

Summer. During the school year we’re too busy, but in summer I have the brain space to declutter and reset before the next year.

We have had a super lazy morning which after kind of a busy week going out and doing things it's kind of nice to just chill at home some days right watch out for you I want to say something nice to you okay say that I'm very strong you can see I don't like them oh hello you can see me here she wants to go through another crack to go in there you should join me the little boys are preparing for a show for us what do you think it's going to be oh gosh let's hope not who dared to challenge me

So it is lunchtime the kids are watching a show while eating lunch I am finally eating some lunch and going to get ready for the day you know here at midday um the only thing we really have to do today is my son has karate tonight so I don't really need to do my makeup today but I got some new makeup in that I wanted to try so I figured we could do a little get ready with me the first thing I'm going to use is the um mary kay timewise day cream the mary kay timewise whole skincare collection is like my favorite

So I will leave a link below to um my consultant and dear friend but I just love how it smells and how it feels it's the good stuff they have a night cream too which is like oh such a wonderful smell it's a different scent than the day cream and honestly it's become such a routine to use it at night that it's almost like the smell of sleep if you have anything like that that's like oh okay this is like an indication that it's time to relax

And anyways that's my one of my favorite things okay put on my foundation here one thing I'm really trying to get done this weekend is cleaning out the school room summer is such a great time to relax but it's also one of my favorite times to get the house back in order like a whole reset like a chance to declutter and um yeah just get stuff back in order I know like spring cleaning is like such a big term but I don't know we're always still

So you can take this to go with you all right they've got like little instructions in here which is great for people like me who literally have no idea what they're doing with makeup eye method okay so on so this is the number two hot cherry sheer red okay looks like that okay we're gonna give this a go so I'm going to brush it on here oh that's really quite red okay that's all I'll do what do you think and then we're gonna kind of wipe some of that away maybe I'll put it on a little too thick this time on this side I'm gonna try using my finger do a little less makeup tips with Sarah truly something I never thought I'd be

Filming but we're just having fun that's the fun of like a day with nothing to do is we can we can play with makeup and that's it's fine there you go not sure in this lighting if you can tell much of a difference but it definitely went on lighter over here to just use my finger and kind of tap some of it on there just a little bit more off but that's pretty cool I like that okay the next thing that I've never used before

But I've been wanting to try is for your eyebrows anytime I've ever tried to use like an actual eyebrow pencil it looks crazy it looks terrible so I've not really mastered that so this from I method beauty is perfect eyebrows in seconds which comes in this nice little pouch which is pretty cool travel pouch so I'll show you what's inside first so they've got the different um stencils that you can use different shapes that are in here so you know if you want to like be surprised or not kidding

So different shapes for you to choose from um this is the brow pomade the little applicators and of course instructions for those of us who really need instructions I appreciate that okay so it's a whole thing so the first step is to choose a stencil that fits best for you so which I think number three yeah it's a pretty solid fit there all right so now I'm gonna dip the sponge into the pomade we're just learning this together if you already know how to do this then you're probably laughing here we go this is pretty funny

And then there's another tool that you can use for like the more sparse areas I'm gonna put some of the pomade on that and you can kind of get in there and then it says to finish it off with this spoolie tool to give it a natural finish okay voila all right without and the width I'm pretty happy with that so I feel like I could have probably used honestly a little bit less and have it be a little less dark so I might just take a little bit off here

But yeah that looks way better than when I have tried it just with a pencil in the past that has looked really clown like let me do the other side so I don't look so crazy okay I'll leave a link to that below what are you all doing just dropped my son off for karate um so we're all gonna hang out in the car the kids get to bring their ipads and play while we wait and this is a great time for me to catch up on some hooked on phonics reading with my five-year-old um we've been kind of slacking this summer

So I haven't been to the pool as much lately because it's been hard to catch it at the right time it's nice just enjoying a nice evening at the pool good job I always somehow forget that the deer flies or whatever they are mayflies horse flies love to come out at sunset we are like under attack here the kids are still having fun I'm just sort of like running around lacking myself okay you got me right in the eye yeah thanks I'll shoot you don't get him while he's in timeout you ready to go night night yes you are yeah that's great news all right let's go to the van little turtle this boy is always such a good gentleman holds open the gate
